1. How to Use
A. Look up the brand and model in the Application Chart. Find the original spoke length, thickness, and thread.
B. Measure the spoke length with a metric ruler or tape. See below for the meaning of spoke length, and how it is a little less than total length. Note that the rim end of installed spokes is about 2 mm past the outer surface of the rim.
C: Verify the measured length and the listed length are the same or close to the same. This prevents errors from wheels that have been swapped or re-spoked, or from confusing, mistaken or unknown model names.
D. Look up the spoke length in the Spokes for Sale list. Find the price and availability.
Spoke length can be measured from different points in the head, such as the inner curve, the outer curve, or total length. So some spec sheets might list the same spoke as slightly different lengths. Besides that, spokes can be a little longer or shorter and still work fine, as long as the original spoke was not already short or long. For example, pre-1977 Puch Maxi spec is 191mm, while 1977-later is 188mm, with the same rim and hub. A 1/16 inch (1.6mm) more or less is no big deal. Here, with bicycle style 90 degree bend spokes, we use the center of the head as the length end point, which is why it’s often 1-2mm different than manufacturer specification. With motorcycle style inner (less than 90 degree) and outer (more than 90 degree) types, we use the 90 degree equivalent. This way inners and outers have the same length. Otherwise inners are longer because they have less bend.
Spoke thickness usually goes by wire gauge, where 14g=2.0 mm, 13g=2.3, 12g=2.6, 11g=2.9, 10g=3.2, 9g=3.6, 8g=4.0 mm. French spokes have a different wire gauge (Jauge de Paris of 1857), where 13J=2.0, 14J=2.2, 15J=2.4, 16J=2.7, 17J=3.0 mm. Italian spokes are always in even millimeters, like 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5.
Spoke threads Most spokes have rolled threads, where the thread tops are raised higher and the diameter is greater than the plain spoke. Most rolled spoke threads do not match any metric screw. Some spokes have cut threads, or thinner ends, with thread tops lower than the plain spoke. So there are many different thread variations. Because of this, for most of these vintage spokes, the maker of the nipples (nuts) must match the maker of the spoke. For most, the ID mark on the spoke must match the ID mark on the nut.
Thread pitch Here the meaning of “thread” is the width of one thread, in mm. Italian spokes have coarse thread (0.65 for Ø2.5, 0.65 or 0.60 for Ø3.0), French spokes have medium thread (0.55 for Ø2.4 and Ø2.7, 0.60 for Ø3.0). Japan, Taiwan, and Korean spokes have fine thread (0.45 for Ø2.3 and Ø2.6, or 0.55 for Ø2.9 or 0.65 for Ø3.2). German spokes have fine thread (0.45 for Ø2.3, 0.45 or 0.50 for Ø2.6, or 0.65 for Ø3.0). Swiss spokes have French threads with Italian diameters.

Spoke head logos (ID marks). See more here
ID marks: Most moped spokes have a logo or ID mark that raises out of the spoke head. They are listed as (A) Alpina or (R) Redaelli = Italian, (Δ) = delta, () or (∴) 3-dot = Asian, (Б) DT = Swiss, (♣) Berg or (U) Union = German, (C) (B) (*) (+) or (Я) = French. Replacement spokes with the same thickness and same ID mark, have the same thread, so they screw into the same nut. That allows easy replacement, re-using the old nut, without even deflating the tire.
Substitutes: Many original spokes are not available, where the price says “none”. They are for reference only, not for sale, but included so that a close enough substitute can be found. If the original spoke for your bike is not available, then first look how far into the nipples your original spoke are, to see how much longer or shorter the spokes could be. Then remove one to precisely measure it’s length. Use the drawings above to know how. Then look for a spoke a little longer (or shorter) that would substitute. A thicker one is better, but may require precise drilling of the rim hole and sometimes the hub hole. A thinner one would need a tight fitting washer to prevent the smaller nipple from pulling through the rim hole.

Why so many? Myrons Mopeds parts inventory is from about 20-30 moped shops from the Los Angeles area that closed in the 1980’s or 90’s. Each shop carried different moped brands and parts. Add to that, 200 mopeds that were stripped for parts. That is why there is such a large variety of 200 different, mostly original spokes, new and used.
4. Spoke Nipples
Vintage moped spokes have many thread sizes, so that the nipples do not usually interchange. Besides thread, spoke nipples can have different widths for different rim holes. The information below explains all of the variety. Hopefully, shops and individuals that have nipple-less spokes or spoke-less nipples will understand why, and maybe find matches.

5. Spoke Threads Explained
Standards: In the 1800’s the world’s steel wire manufacturers developed standards for wire products like spokes or nails. Each country chose one of several standards for wire size (thickness). For spokes, the thread style and pitch, were also chosen to follow each country’s thread standards.
Families: A “family” of spokes is made of many different lengths, with several different threads and thicknesses, that all obey the same standards. In vintage mopeds, the main spoke families are USA, Japan, Germany, France, and Italy. What family a spoke is in matters when the nipple is missing. A nipple from one family will often not fit a similar sized spoke from a different family. Or it might fit loosely and then fail later by stripping off the threads.
Gauge: This word means two things, 1) the size of a particular wire, and 2) the set of all wire sizes. So when you say the wire gauge you have to specify the wire “gauge” also. So a wire spoke from a Harley Davidson might be a “9 gauge spoke (US Steel Wire Gauge)”. But if it’s from a Honda it would be a “9 gauge spoke (British Standard Wire Gauge). The two 9 gauge spokes have slightly different thicknesses. They both are 9 gauge but belong to different gauges. That’s confusing!
Gauge numbers get larger as wire size gets smaller. This backward numbering originated in the 1700’s, from the drawing of a cold steel rod through smaller and smaller holes. With each pass through a smaller die hole, the rod gets thinner and longer. The original gauge was the number of passes it took to make the wire. That’s why smaller wires have bigger gauge numbers.
Rolled threads: Spokes have rolled threads, rather than cut threads. Rolled threads have thread tops higher than the plain spoke (thread diameter greater than wire diameter). Rolled threads can be any diameter, for any wire diameter. The different wire diameters, and the different thread pitches, is why there are so many different vintage moped spoke threads.

6. Spoke Length Calculation
Calculation allows error checking. Reported spoke lengths must agree with calculated spoke lengths. When they disagree, an error is exposed. Then the specifications are checked and the erroneous one is found and corrected. Most, but not all, spokes in the Spokes for Sale List above have been verified correct by calculation.
Calculation allows predicting. When changing hubs, rims, or spoke patterns, the spoke length changes. The new length can be predicted by calculation.

The plane of the rim holes contains a triangle with sides Rr , Hr and Lr. Perpendicular to that is a right triangle with sides Lr, Hd and hypotenuse L.
θ is calculated from the number of spokes h and the cross pattern x. Lr is calculated from Hr, Rr and θ by the law of cosines. L is calculated from Lr and Hd by the Pythagorean theorem.
rim (in inches) = rim size = diameter at tire seat
Rd = rim depth, spoke end to tire seat
Rr (in mm) = rim radius at spoke rim-end
A (in mm) = (rim*25.4)/2 -Rd = rim*12.7-Rd
Hr (in mm) = hub radius at spoke hub-end
L and R hub holes are staggered, to make all spokes equal
otherwise spokes are 2 long, 2 short, 2 long, 2 short, etc.
h = # of spokes x = # of crosses
θ = 2*3.14*x/(h/2) = 12.56*x/h
Hd (in mm) = hub depth, hub hole plane to rim hole plane
L and R rim holes are staggered, with separate rim hole planes
L and R can have separate hub “depths”, not necessarily equal
L (in mm) = spoke length
Lr² = Rr² + Hr² – 2*Lr*Hr*cos(θ)
L² = Hd² + Lr²
h 0 x rim Rd Hr 0 Hd L(calc) L(listed)

7. Honda Spokes
Honda spokes changed frequently. The superseded spokes became substitutes.
Inner (A = 80° bend) and outer (B = 100° bend) types are also substitutes for each other.
This chart lists only one spoke for each application, the original, but Honda lists several.
Dark grey data are from partzilla.com and cmsnl.com .
Light grey is from actual spokes or assumed. Bright red is corrected.
