1. Cogged Belts

These are also called timing belts and synchronous belts, because like a chain, they cannot slip. There are not many mopeds or mini-cycles with cogged (toothed) belts.

Besides different lengths and widths there are also different pitches and profiles (tooth shapes). So there are thousands of possible cogged belts. The belt length is the tooth count times the pitch. So a 610-5M belt has 610/5 = 122 teeth.

Di Blasi: The 1997-on DiBlasi R7E has a cogged drive belt 18mm wide, and has 122 teeth that repeat every 5mm (5mm pitch). One replacement that is shorter is 600-5M-18, with 120 teeth. It fits and meshes correctly, but only when the adjustment slots are lengthened. A 610-5M-18 with 122 teeth is the original size. Here is a 610-5M-18 in New Jersey.

Laura M56: This engine from Holland is on 1978-80 Batavus and 1982-85 Trac mopeds. The original belt was 20mm wide, had 79 teeth with 5mm pitch. The tooth profile was T5, not 5M. Very similar belts 400-5M-20 and 395-5M-20 do not mesh right. The correct belt is T5x395, price $16. For many years, there was only a shorter belt available. It required shaving down the tooth tops of the big pulley. 100’s of bikes had that done. Those bikes would still need a one-tooth-less belt, T5x390, price $18.

Jawa 210 and 225: The 1983-1995 Jawa 210 and 225 moped models have a cogged belt 25mm wide, and has 51 teeth type T10, that repeat every 10mm (10mm pitch). A 25T10/510 with 51 teeth is the original size. Here is a 25T10/510 (510-T10-25) in New Jersey.

V-Belts Explained

The smooth sides of V-belts are what grips the pulley. The harder the pull, the more it grips, because of the V angle. The top and bottom do not touch anything. 

Moped V-BeltsFirst is a graphic showing the cross-sectional shapes and sizes of replacement V-belts that can be used on mopeds and small scooters. V-belts for variators (variable pulleys) are the “low profile” type, called “variable speed belts”. V-belts for fixed pulleys are the “high profile” type, called either “classic” or “cogged”, see below.  

V-belts are made by Gates in different styles, widths, and lengths. Here the width choices from 9.5 to 17.5 mm. Larger or smaller sizes are omitted.

Smooth or Notched: The notches, or cogs, on V-belts are not teeth, like on toothed belts. They are relief slots that help the belt bend easier, for less friction and more efficiency. Equipment that originally had smooth belts can use cogged belts, and visa versa.

Coming up: How to tell the chain pitch by measuring the sprocket. Hint: the diameter at the tooth tops is not important.

Chain Pitch equals Pitch Diameter times Pi divided by the number of teeth.

Measuring the Pitch Diameter is difficult, especially with odd numbered and low numbered tooth counts.

Locating two pin centers, 180 degrees apart, and measuring the distance between, is the problem.

You have to know the roller diameter to locate the pin center. Something like a chopstick is needed…

1. Chain Sizes

Pitch is the distance from one link to another. Pitch matters the most. The pitch, in eighths of an inch, is the first digit of the motorcycle chain size. 

Roller Width (Wr) is the distance between the insides of the chain inner plates.

Named width is the minimum width of chain, and the maximum width of sprocket. The named width, in eighths of an inch, is the second and third digit in the motorcycle chain size.

Roller Diameter (Dr) is the third thing that matters for fitting a given sprocket.

Any replacement chain must have the same pitch and roller diameter (Dr). The roller width (Wr) should be the same but can be a little more. The roller width is correct for the sprocket width when the chain can move side-to-side on the sprocket, but only a little bit. So the sprocket width needs to be a little less than the roller width.

Chain replacement: When there is nothing else close to the chain except the sprocket teeth, the three blue dimensions, pitch, width, and roller diameter are all that matter for replacing an entire chain (and the number of links). These are related to the places that touch the sprocket. If the 3 blue items on the replacement chain are the same, it will fit the same sprockets.

The exceptions are when there are other things close to the chain. On some Chinese bicycle engines with a 415 chain, the engine case is very close to the chain. A 415H replacement chain is wider, scrapes the side of the engine causing damage and breakage. On vintage Motobecane mopeds there are rubber bands on the front sprocket that interfere with a 415H, preventing it from sitting all the way into the valleys. When those are in place a 415H does not mesh well. It sounds and feels terrible. Once the rubber bands are removed a 415H replaces a 415 perfectly. See Chain Service below.

Link replacement: For replacing a master link or one or more individual links, more things matter: inner width, pin length and pin diameter. On modern chains these 3 red items are standardized. But for vintage 1970’s and 80’s chains they were not. Often several different chains interchange (fit the same sprocket), but have different pin diameters, pin lengths, and plate thicknesses. So while the entire chain interchanges, the individual links do not. For example, a vintage Puch master link would not fit a vintage Garelli chain (because the pin is too thick). But an entire Puch chain would replace an entire Garelli chain. 

Measuring: Chains for mopeds, motorized bicycles, gas or electric scooters, mini-ATVs, go-karts, mini-cars, and mini-bikes are not on most application charts. For these oddball vehicles you have to determine the chain size by measurement with a digital calipers, and counting how many link pins.

Metric and Inch Some Chinese made scooters and pocket bikes have 04B chains (6 mm pitch) instead of 25 (6.35 = 1/4″). Some have T8F or 05B chains (8 mm pitch) instead of 35 (9.53 = 3/8″). Metric chains look the same but don’t interchange with inch chains. 

H versions: The H (heavy duty) versions fit the same sprocket but have thicker wider plates and thicker longer pins. So a 415 master link won’t fit a 415H chain (because the pins are too short), and a 415H master link won’t fit a 415 chain (because the pins are too thick).

Master Links Cabinet

 

 

At left is Myrons Mopeds master link cabinet, full of master links and half links from 20 other moped shops that closed in the late 1980’s in Southern California. Each of the drawers contains about 10 to 100 links. Each link was measured carefully and/or put through this gauntlet of Go/NoGo gauges, which are the actual master links and corresponding inner links contained in each drawer. From left to right, the order is smallest pitch first, smallest pin first (for that pitch), and the smallest inner width first (for that pitch and pin). Inner width for a master link is the space between the inside of the outer plates, which is slightly greater than the inner width for the chain, as in the chart below.

Notice that there are no “international” master links, like 04B (6mm) or 05B (8mm). These chains did not appear in California until the late 1990’s with the stand-up scooters, pocket bikes, and electric bikes and scooters, mostly from China.

Motobecane:  1970’s-1980’s Motobecane Mobylette 40, 50, or 50V mopeds, the front sprocket behind the large pulley has some rubber rings that interfere with modern 415H chains. Fortunately the two 1 1/4 inch rubber rings, one on each side of the sprocket, which can be removed with something like a curved dental pick. This issue of a chain not meshing because of  (unecessary) rubber noise dampener rings contacting the outer plates instead of the sprocket contacting the rollers, also occurs on Peugeot, but not as much.

Peugeot 103: Sometimes the newer “H” rated chains do not fit until after the bike is rode for a few minutes. The two rubber rings on either side of the original sprocket interfere with the larger outer plates on the 415H chain, causing the chain to run higher and not mesh well. After riding awhile the chain noise gets less, as the rubbers get squished and interfere less. Still, it is better to remove the pulley, and remove the rubber rings, shown at right, to have a smooth running chain.

Peugeot 102: This is the only US-model moped that uses a 42 chain, same sprocket as a 415 (1/2 x 3/16), but lighter duty (thinner pins, thinner and smaller plates). Sedis made both 415 chain for Peugeot 103, and 42 chain for the lighter weight Peugeot 102. Old Sedis chains are often cracked. Then they break/throw the chain. No fun. To use a modern 415H chain, the two rubber rings on either side of the sprocket must be removed, or it won’t mesh properly. See photos at right.

Motorized Bicycles 415 – Only Kind: Certain modern motorized bicycle gas engine kits use a 415 chain that passes very close to the engine case on both sides. These do not have enough room for the wider-on-the-outside 415H. They require a 415.

Motorized Bicycles:  415 and 410 Mixed: Certain modern motorized bicycle gas engine kits have a wide engine sprocket for 3/16 and a thin rear sprocket for a 1/8 chain. A 415 or 415H chain works but would be expected to have less retention (it would come off easier).

Motorized Bicycles:  Long Chain Runs: Motorized bicycles with long chain runs need chain guides and/or chain tensioners, or else the chain comes off when it slaps going over bumps, or when the frame or wheel flexes, or when the engine mounts shift/slip. The kits don’t usually come with any.

American Made Minibikes: There were many different manufacturers of minibikes back in the 60’s and 70’s but most of them used either a 35, 40, 0r 41 chain. Number 35 was used on most all 4-5-6 inch wheel minibikes while 41 was used on larger minicycles such as Rupp Roadster II and Speedway. Number 41 chain will not run on a number 40 sprocket. Number 40 chain will run on a number 41 sprocket but it will be wider than needed.

Fun Karts and Minibikes: Many chains have the chain size stamped directly on the chain links. #35, 40, 41 and 420 chain are used in the Fun Kart and Mini Bike industry. An 11 or 12 tooth clutch sprocket usually indicates the use of #35 chain. 10 tooth clutch sprockets usually indicate the use of #40, 41 or 420 chain.

 Why all of this madness about chains?   All through the 1970’s and 1980’s when you needed a master link for your moped, you had to get it from a dealer that sold that kind, or else you had to bring in your chain and hope they could find one that fit. If you had a Motobecane and you needed a master link, you could not get one from a Puch dealer, even if you showed them your chain. Their master links had thicker pins. For decades, owners have been frustrated when they bought a #415 master link for their chain, and it did not fit. That’s because there are 18 or so different 415-compatible chains. By the 1990’s no moped shop sold master links, instead they made you buy a whole chain. Thankfully, there is much better standardization in this century, in moped chains. But there are still a lot of older moped chains and substitutes that are all different. So it’s still not possible to tell (guess) what master link a customers moped needs over the phone. Some things never change…

Scan up and down the chart looking for similarities. Notice how the pitch P, and roller width W, and roller diameter D, can be the same for many different chains. Too bad the pin diameter A can vary with the maker. Ouch. A pin too big won’t fit. A pin too small will fit, but will be loose. The only way to get the correct master link is by knowing the pitch P, roller width W, roller diameter D,  inner width W+2*T, and pin diameter A.

6. Moped Chain History

Vintage Moped Chains: Vintage bikes often have obsolete chains, or they specify the size in an obsolete way. Vintage equipment used the inch size, pitch x width. Modern motorcycles all use chain model numbers, like 428, 520, 630. The above chart shows that connection. In mopeds, there are 18 different chains, all size 415, or 1/2 x 3/16. They have different pin diameters and inner widths. In modern mopeds there are about 3 or 4.

Moped Chain History: When a shop installs a new chain, they throw the leftover pieces in a box. As the years go by, layers of chains accumulate, with the oldest ones at the bottom, as long as no one mixes up the pile.  That’s one way to “date” chains. At Myrons, certain boxes of parts have been untouched since about 1985 to 1995. Only one little scrap of modern 415H chain was in that material, from those years. Not even 415H master links were in that time zone. This little scrap is what Shaun believes to be the earliest example of a 415H chain. Shown below on the Motobecane sprockets, it’s gold and  says “Taiwan”. Taiwan bicycle products and machinery blossomed in the 1980’s. China made components came out about 15 years later.

Italian Chain History: At least five different Regina chains are original on 1970’s and 80’s Italian made mopeds, two that say “Regina Extra” and three that say “Regina” underlined.  See their pictures above. They all have different master links! Craziness!

Above, seven Tomos chains take three different master links. The pins range from 3.89 to 4.14mm thick. The inner width ranges from 7.9 to 9.6mm. “Inner width” means measured between the inside walls of the outer plates. A wider inner link will not fit inside a narrow outer link.

First the “Regina underlined” (3.89 x 8.4) on early A3, and “W circled” (4.05 x 7.9) also on early A3, then “W circled” (4.14 x 9.4) on late A3, then ČZ (4.14 x 9.6) on A35, then CIC 415H on late A35, and now plain 415H (3.93 x 8.5) on A55 models. The chains got thicker and wider and taller on the outside, as the decades progressed. The pins got thicker, and then thinner, and now thick again: 3.89 ->4.05 -> 4.14 -> 4.14 -> 3.93 ->3.93 ->4.14. Same thing with inner width: 8.4 -> 7.9 -> 9.4 -> 9.6 -> 8.5 ->8.5 ->9.6. Perhaps this is why Tomos stopped selling master links…

Four kinds of moped pedal threads

Pedal threads: Most bicycle pedals have either 1/2-20 or 9/16-20 threads. But some vintage bicycles use “French thread” pedals, which is metric 14 – 1.25. The 14.0 mm thread is slightly smaller than 9/16″ (14.3 mm), but bigger than 1/2″ (12.7mm).

14mm pedals screw into 9/16 cranks all the way but fit loosely. Then later they break off or strip out easier.

9/16 pedals screw into 14mm cranks so tight they stop half way. Then later they break off or strip out easier. 

 

 


2   P E D A L   C R A N K S

 

Left and Right: With shoes it’s easy to tell if they’re on the wrong feet. But with moped cranks it is not. A left crank and pedal looks and functions the same as a right. So it is possible for a moped to have both left pedals and cranks, or both right, or the right on the left side and the left on the right side. Then when, say the left side pedal is missing, it might actually need a right, or visa versa.

Righty Tighty: This rule says “Viewed from above the bolt head, turning to the right, clockwise, is tightening”. Almost all bolts and nuts obey this rule because they are right hand thread. But left hand threads are opposite. They obey the opposite rule, “Lefty Tighty”. 

How to tell: It is sometimes not easy to tell if a pedal or a crank is left or right. Most modern bicycle pedals are stamped L or R. Most modern reproduction cranks are also stamped L or R. Most vintage European right cranks are stamped D (droit, destra, desno, derecho) or R (recht, right). Some vintage European left cranks are not marked, and some are stamped S (sinestra) or G (gauche) or L (levo, left).

Another way to tell is by viewing the threads directly. When a right thread bolt is held with the tail facing up, each thread slopes upward going from left to right. When a left thread bolt is viewed the same way, the threads slope in the opposite direction. With crank threads, right thread goes inward clockwise, left thread goes outward clockwise. You have to follow the first thread around in a circle with your eyes.

How not to strip threads: Know which way to turn, and use lubricant. Know how it should feel. Know how tight it should be. And know how to use taps or dies or thread files to “clean up” damaged threads, before they fail completely.

Shown here are the 3-style vintage Italian original pedal cranks on Italian (mostly) mopeds with Morini MO1, MO2, M1 engines. These cranks need to be the 3 style, that “goes outward right away”, because the engine sticks out close to the pedal shaft.

Garelli Gulp requires pedal arms that go outward early, with a high offset. Here is the #502 pedal arm set that fits but the arms are one inch shorter.

These 502 pedal arms have 9.5 mm wedge pin holes, but the holes are 0.5 mm closer to the pedal shaft, so they either need 9.0 pins, or 9.5 pins ground 0.5 mm thinner on the flat side.

These “go outward right away”, not to clear the engine, but to clear the covers above the engine, when the crank is vertical.

Shown here are the 4-style vintage French original pedal cranks on Motobecane Mobylette mopeds 1972-1980+. On variator models, like 50V, the engine swings back as the bike speeds up. The clutch wheel often scrapes against the left pedal crank. On non-variator (Dimoby) models, like 50 or 40, the engine does not swing back as the bike speeds up (but it does swing to keep the belt tight). On those models there is also 3/8 inch more space between the clutch wheel and the pedal crank. So they “never” scrape.

What were they thinking? Pedal cranks for Puch mopeds have about 1/3 of the threads removed by machining. This makes them get stripped easier. The only plausible explanation is Puch was thinking about safety. When a rider forgets where the pedals are, and leans over in a turn, one pedal can hit the ground. If it hits hard enough it can cause a crash. Puch pedals are designed to break away, rather than causing a crash. 

 

 

 

 


Pedal Crank Selection:

Offset: Ideally the pedal arms should have enough offset to not hit anything, even after being bent inward a little, yet not have too much offset. Too much offset causes the pedals to hit the ground sooner when leaned over, and to stick out more when parking or storing, and to hit the riders feet more when backing up.

Length: Longer pedal arms provide more leverage. For mopeds the pedals are mainly used for starting the engine, rather than pedaling. So if the engine turns over easily then long pedal arms are not needed. Longer arms hit the ground sooner when leaned over. And when not pedaling, one foot is more forward and the other is more back. So shorter arms are better, in many ways. But for pedaling, longer arms are better, especially for riders with long legs.

Style: Some engines or bikes need cranks that “go outward right away” because something is sticking out near the pedal shaft. This is the style 3 above. Sachs 505, Morini MO1, MO2 and Garelli VIP engines are some common examples.

Straightening: 1. With a special tool like the one shown, and two people, a bent pedal crank can be straightened in one minute without any removal. The second person has to pull on the bike the opposite way, by standing hard on the opposite pedal. 2. Without that tool, the pedal only is removed and a long pipe that fits closely over the crank is used to apply torque. 3. For more stubborn cranks, the crank is removed and placed in a large bench vise. Again the pipe is placed over the crank at the right place, and torque is applied. Moped cranks require 100 to maybe 600 foot-pounds of torque to bend. This is done without heating.  

Re-threading a crank

Re-threading: Often just the first few threads become messed up. Bicycle shops have pedal taps, size 9/16-20 Right and Left, that can repair partially-stripped threads on moped cranks. Hardware stores do not have those taps, instead they have 9/16-18, more coarse. So pedal taps are a bicycle-industry-only item. 

Repairing pedal crank threads is done by starting the tap from the good side, which is the back. Sometimes crank removal is required, and sometimes it is optional. Cutting fluid, or at least oil, is applied. The tap is moved back and forth as it is screwed in (like 4 steps forward and 3 steps back), until it goes all the way through.

Rethreading a M14-1.25 crank to 9/16-20 (from 14.0 to 14.3mm) is more difficult. The plated steel is hard and tough. It takes longer and requires more force. The crank arm and tap get hot by the end of the 10-20 minute process.

Pedal Crank pins

These round pins have a flat wedge that fits tight against a slot in the shaft. They are pressed or hammered in and out. In the bicycle industry they are known as cotter pins. Here they are called crank pins or wedge pins.

One Up One Down: This rule says that if one crank pin points up, then the other should point down. This makes the left and right crank arms parallel at 12 o’clock and 6 o’clock. When the pins are both up, the arms are at 12 o’clock and 5 o’clock, lopsided and awkward.

Special pins: The 502 aftermarket pedal arms require special wedge pins. The regular pin shown on the right is 9.0 x 7.2 thick. After grinding it becomes the special pin on the left, which is 9.0 x 6.5 thick, or 1.3 mm thinner. These pins are required for the 502R and 502L aftermarket pedal arms. Price $8 each

 

 


4  P E D A L   S H A F T S

Some mopeds with external pedal shafts, and separate pedal and motor chains, have one of the crank arms permanently attached to the shaft and sprocket. With those, to get a new sprocket-side arm you have to replace the shaft-with-arm.

Some mopeds with external pedal shafts, and separate pedal and motor chains, have no crank arms permanently attached to the shaft and sprocket. With those the sprocket-side arm can be replaced.

5  F R E E W H E E L S

Some mopeds have one drive chain and some have two. Two-chain mopeds, with both a motor chain and a pedal chain, have freewheels, like most bicycles. The freewheel is the rear pedal sprocket that spins free and goes “click click click” in the reverse direction, but locks up solid in the forward direction. The freewheel allows the pedals to be stationary even when the rear wheel is moving forward. The moped brands with right-side freewheels are Puch, Peugeot, Motobecane, Batavus, Sparta (Foxi), Hercules (Sachs), Piaggio (Vespa), Honda (PA50), Kreidler, KTM (Foxi), Kynast, Flandria. There are two brands with left-side backward freewheels, Jawa and Benelli. All of the other moped brands do not have external freewheels, but instead have a freewheel mechanism inside the engine unit.

The freewheel screws on and tightens with pedaling. Once it is tight, a special tool is required to remove it. The tool fits into slots in the freewheel center. Some low-end modern single-speed bicycle freewheels do not have removal slots. Those cheap kinds can be removed by destroying the freewheel. To remove a freewheel destructively without a removal tool, the freewheel is first disassembled, where all the little balls and clickers fall out, and then the inner hub is unscrewed in a bench vise or with a pipe wrench.

Most freewheels go on the right side of the bike and thus have right-hand thread, but Jawa and Benelli ones go on the left side of the bike and have left-hand thread.

Freewheel threads: Like with pedal threads there is a common size and an uncommon size slightly smaller.

The common size is 1.375″ – 24, which equals 34.92 – 1.06 mm. Most modern bicycles worldwide have this ISO (International Standards Organization) standard freewheel thread type. 

The uncommon size is M34.7 – 1.00, which equals 34.70 – 1.00 mm. This “French” thread type is on vintage bicycles from France, Belgium, Spain or Switzerland, and on Motobecane mopeds with Motobecane-made hubs.

So the French freewheels are slightly smaller than the rest of the world, 34.7 instead of 34.9. That small amount does not matter as long as the bike is pedaled gently. But it does matter when the pedals are pushed very hard. Then the loose fitting threads on the wheel hub can strip out, a disaster.  

It is difficult to tell which thread type a hub has, by measuring the thread tops with a calipers. The 34.92 thread hubs measure 34.65 to 34.7. The 34.70 hubs measure 34.55 to 34.6. On some hubs the tops of the threads are worn down and measure less. So a standard thread might seem like a French thread type. Because of this, it is better to put away the calipers and use “feel”.

When the freewheel and hub have the same thread type, the freewheel screws on easy, yet has no looseness. Looseness is felt with fingertips pulling and pushing the freewheel center side to side. When a 34.92 freewheel is on a 34.7 hub, the center of the freewheel can move 0.22 mm.  Here is a video of that. That looseness or “wiggle” is felt. The same is true for any threaded thing. When a bolt fits a nut, it screws on easy and yet does not wiggle.    

All of the freewheels in Myrons Mopeds inventory were measured by feel. For each bike model listed above, a sample rear wheel with original freewheel was measured directly by feel. The freewheel was removed. It’s threads were checked by screwing onto both a French and a standard hub. The wheel threads were checked by screwing on both a French and a standard freewheel.

Result: None of the hubs or freewheels had French thread, except Motobecanes with Motobecane-made hubs. Wow!

Result: All Leleu-made hubs have standard freewheel thread 1.375″-24, even those for Motobecane. All Motobecane-made hubs have French thread M34.7-1.0. All Motobecane-made “6-star” mag wheels have standard thread, but it is tapered and begins with French thread, so that either type of freewheel can be used.

How to tell: The best way to tell if a 1970’s Motobecane moped rear hub is Motobecane-made (and therefore French thread) is visually. There is an prominent M logo on the freewheel side. There is no step on the freewheel side, instead it slopes gradually. The flanges go farther out from the spoke holes. So from 100 feet away, viewed from the side, the Motobecane-made hubs appear larger than Leleu-made hubs.

 

Summary

All two-chain rear hubs or wheels, on mopeds from the 1970’s and 80’s, have standard freewheel threads, except Motobecane-made hubs on 1950’s -60’s and some 1970’s Motobecane mopeds.

A standard thread freewheel fits a French thread hub and works fine when pedaled normally. Only when a strong athletic person pedals very hard, the hub threads can strip off, requiring wheel or hub replacement.

1950’s – 60’s Motobecane: Many models, maybe all, had French freewheel threads M34.7-1.0. In the 1960’s the parts manuals specified the thread. One example, shown at right, is for Motobecane AV88 and Motoconfort AU88. It lists the 18-tooth 15244 freewheel as having M34.7-100 thread. 

The French freewheel thread cover up: It is very odd that, after 1976-77, Motobecane had two different freewheel threads, but they hid that fact. Instead they made the teeth different, 15244 (French thread) was 18 teeth, and the newer 14298 (standard thread) was 20 teeth. The Motobecane America parts manuals list both freewheels without explanation. There does not seem to be anything about freewheels in the Parts or Service Bulletins. The physical freewheels do not say the thread. The actual parts labels do not say the thread either. As a result, this cover-up has caused confusion and mystery for 39 years (1978-2017).
