Leleu aluminum wheel hubs are made in France. E. Leleu et Cie (E. Leleu and Co.) made quality drum brake hubs for mopeds and small motorcycles, since at least the 1950’s. Leleu hubs are original on 1970’s Peugeot, Motobecane, Solex, Sparta, Puch, Batavus, and Kreidler mopeds.

Brake drum: 1970’s mopeds were mostly all 80mm (∅80) brake drums, with some 70mm (∅70). French mopeds in the 1950’s and 60’s had 100 mm brake drums.

This is a way of checking for errors and calculating unknown spacings. The sum of all of the spacings along the axle must equal the axle length. Purple means guessed. Green means known or measured. Blue means calulated. Black means unsure.

On Sparta the two chain adjusters go inside the frame. Because they each take up 1.5 mm along the axle, the actual frame width is 140. 137 is the effective frame width.

Note 1: Items 3 and 4 are only for models with no speedometer. For models with a speedometer and a driver unit on the front axle, 3 and 4 are omitted.

Note 2: The Motobecane 20380 axle set in the parts catalog has left side nut 6o and spacer 5 that take up a total of 9 mm of axle space. But the 20380 axle set on actual bikes has nut 60 instead. It takes up the same 9mm of axle space.

8. Front spoke and mag Ø80 loose balls

Motobecane made many of their own components. Like the way Tomos made their hubs compatible with Grimeca, Motobecane made their hubs compatible with Leleu. So the complete wheels interchange, the brake plate complete interchanges, but most of the individual parts do not. Motobecane made both stamped steel and cast aluminum spoke wheel hubs. Their cast aluminum hub has a big M logo embossed into it.

Note 1. The original equipment 20448 was a special toothed washer. The original replacement 20448 is a special flat split washer. The gap can be be spread wider or squeezed smaller to adjust how tight it grips the axle.

Note 2. The substitute left spacer requires eliminating the 20448 toothed washer. That has no effect when the wheel is installed. But when the wheel is removed, without the toothed washer the axle can slide out. Thats how all Japan type axles are.

Note 3: The 21735 right dust cover is not needed if the original 6000 bearing, open on both sides, is replaced with a 6000Z, shielded on one side, or a 6000RS, sealed on one side, with the sealed side facing out.

Leleu and Motobecane Nuts

Nuts made by Leleu have sharp corners on both sides, except for outer axle nuts which have sharp corners only on one side. Leleu-made nuts are used on Peugeot, Puch, Batavus, Kreidler, Sparta, Solex and Motobecane.

Nuts made by Motobecane have rounded corners on both sides, like most nuts have. Motobecane-made nuts are used only on Motobecane.

Part numbers are color coded. Peugeot part numbers are grey. Puch #’s are green. Motobecane #’s for parts made by Leleu are blue. Motobecane #’s for parts made by Motobecane are aqua. Motobecane #’s for original replacements with a different hex size are violet.

 

These size specifications are from direct measurement. Most parts catalogs do not say the sizes. Of these moped makes, only the Puch parts catalog says the sizes.

 A. Italy Flag Grimeca loose balls

 

Grimeca steel hubs or cast aluminum wheels (mags) are made in Italy. Grimeca is a world leader in motorcycle wheels, with many firsts, including the first disk brake, Ducati 1971, and the first light alloy wheel, Morini 1974.

Spoke wheel hubs: Grimeca makes stamped-steel hubs with 90, 105 or 118 mm brake drums, and 30, 32, 35, or 40 mm center holes.  Within the 90mm drum size, there are at least 4 different single-chain hub bodies, with different spacing’s, and at least 2 different double-chain hub bodies. Each one of those hub bodies can have different axle lengths and axle spacer lengths possible. So there are dozens of configurations possible. Most 90mm Grimeca hubs have 11mm axles and axle components. Most 105mm hubs have 12mm heavy duty axles and axle cones, locknuts, nuts, washers, and spacers.

Brake Plates: Here are identification photos of numbered brake plates. Bare 90 mm plates have 2 types, U and V. Complete 90 mm plates with shoes have 3 types, C, U, and V. Each type can have several versions.

Notes:

Column 3 front Grimeca snowflake, on the side opposite the brake:

On ’83-86 Trac there is no lock nut or washer after the cone. The bearing cone locks onto the Korea-type speedo driver. The cones can be adjusted by rotating the speedo driver on the axle. 

On ’78-80 Batavus there is a 6mm thick lock nut and a 1.5 or 2.0 mm thick washer after the cone and before the VDO speedo driver.

8. 2-chain Mag Ø90 (loose bearings)

Grimeca double chain rear cast alloy wheels are used on Puch, Sears, and JC Penney.  There is a motor chain sprocket and brake on one side, and a smaller bicycle chain freewheel sprocket on the other side. Grimeca cast alloy 2-chain rear wheels were only made in the snowflake style.

9. Rear Hub Ø90 (sealed bearings)

One version of Grimeca 90mm sealed bearing rear hub is shown. It was original on the two-person models Garelli Gulp and VIP. This was one of only a few 1970’s moped Italian wheels with sealed bearings. By the 1990’s it was the opposite, most moped wheels had sealed bearings.

Here Garelli has made adapter sleeves with lips, that the sealed bearings fit into. The lips on the sleeves prevent the press fit (or sliding fit) bearings from moving gradually sideways. The inside holes of this and the other stamped steel Grimeca hubs are smooth tubes, 30, 32 or 35mm ID. So they are not designed for sealed (lip-less) bearings.

1-chain Stamped Steel Hubs: This is for the Sachs engine Columbia. The brake is on the right, sprocket on the left. The center hole was a massive 40mm, with 40×35 adaptor sleeves with thick lips holding large sealed bearings, 6202-8 12.7 x 35 x 11. The axles were long 1/2 inch bolts (12.7 mm). These hubs would normally have 15mm axles and 6202Z bearings, on a small Italian motorcycle. 

The rear brake is on the right, and the sprocket is on the left. These heavy duty stamped steel hubs were made by Grimeca and used on the early (1977) Columbia sheet metal frame models with a Sachs engine. Later models had the 2-chain cast hubs made by Columbia.

11. Rear Hub Ø118 (sealed bearings)

The 2001-2003 early Tomos Revival rear drum brake hub was 118mm Grimeca stamped steel. The front hydraulic disk brake was also Grimeca.

2004-2012 Tomos Revival TS rear drum brake hub was 105mm Tomos-Grimeca aluminum. The front disk brake was AJP until 2007, then generic after that.

The 1978-1981 Safari Commando rear drum brake hub was 118mm Grimeca stamped steel.

12.  1-chain F&R Hubs Ø90 (sealed bearings)

 

In 1975 to 1991 Tomos mopeds with spoke wheels had their own Yugoslavia-made sealed bearing machined aluminum hubs, brake shoes, and stamped steel brake plates, all Grimeca compatible (same drum diameter, width, and location, same cam and pivot shaft locations and sizes).


’75-90 Tomos ∅90 brake plates front T1=24 and rear T2=15=25.

These aluminum hubs have way less broken spokes, compared to the equivalent stamped steel Grimeca hubs. The spoke holes are machined, not punched out. But the rear sprocket lacks a strong center support, so the sprocket bolts work loose as the soft metal deforms. Many sprockets have become not centered. 

These hubs have a machined inner lip on each side to retain the sealed bearings. This is needed because the sealed bearings don’t have outer lips, like Grimeca loose bearing cups have. So these hubs are made for sealed (lip-less) bearings, while Grimeca loose ball hubs are not.

2-chain Cast Aluminum Hubs: This is for the Solo engine Columbia, with both a pedal and motor chain. The Sachs engine Columbia also uses these hubs on certain models, but no freewheel or pedal chain is installed. 

The rear brake and sprocket are both on the left. The hub center is small 28mm stepping to 24mm in the center. The step retains the lip-less sealed bearings, and so no adapter sleeves are needed.

14.  1-chain F&R Mags Ø90 (sealed bearings)

In 1991-95 Tomos mopeds had die cast aluminum wheels with sealed bearings and 90mm brake drums, Grimeca compatible. Tomos made these wheels and the cast aluminum brake plates and other brake and axle components. These Tomos “web” wheels replaced the 1981-91 Grimeca “5-star” mag wheels.

15.  1-chain F&R Mags Ø105 (sealed bearings)

All Tomos brake plates, made in Slovenia, interchange with Grimeca Italian made ones. The brake shoes, cams, also interchange. Tomos had their own “6mm loop” pinch bolt until 1991. So their early 209258 brake arms were “Tomos only”. After that they used the old H60 Grimeca pinch bolt and H59 Grimeca brake arm.

While pre-1996 had 90mm, starting in 1996 Tomos mopeds had 105mm brake drums and new wheel styles, still for size 2.25-16 tires. The die cast aluminum wheels have inner lips for sealed bearings

Coil spring 90: The evolution of the moped 90 mm drum brake is seen in the MMI part numbers. At first, when MMI (Marina Mobili Inc) began in the late 70’s, there were mostly spoke wheels with Italian-made Grimeca stamped steel hubs. Those hubs had small centers that took coil springs and did not require special U or V type brake springs.

Coil spring 105: The first MMI bike model that had a 105mm brake drum was the ’80-82 Negrini KPN. So they added a K suffix for the 105 brake parts.

U-spring 90: Cast aluminum “mag” wheels have larger centers, to large for 90mm brakes with coil springs. At first, in the early 80’s most mags had U-springs. The brake plate and cam were the same as coil type, so only the shoes and spring were different. So they added an M suffix for the mag wheel versions.

V-spring 90: The early 80’s MMI catalog does not mention V-springs. By the late 80’s most mags had them. V type springs, shoes and brake plates offer more safety but more difficult installation. The shoes are retained better.

It should be noted that the G303 also changed the internal gear ratio, with the first two gears close together and the third at rest. If a four-speed gearbox were to be fitted, it was advisable to completely replace the gearbox with that of the previous G304 to avoid excessive “gaps” between second and third gears.

It has the same 12-16-17 piston as on a Morini MO aluminum cylinder, but with a 40.0 bore instead of 40.4mm. It has the same sprockets as Morini. The mount holes are the same as Minarelli V1.

M1: In 1979 Morini came out with the M1 engine, a one-speed with a case-type reed valve. The reed valve induction produced about 20-30% more torque. The result was acceleration about the same as a MO-2 two-speed, but at a much lower cost and complexity. So by about 1980, both the MO-1 and MO-2 were discontinued in favor of the M1.

M101: In 1981 the two-speed M101 came out, a variator-transmission belt-drive engine with a M1 top-end (cylinder, piston and head). The variable-ratio-pulley transmission resulted in increased acceleration over the fixed-ratio M1. The price increased and so did the weight and case length.

Note 1: The piston pin bushing requires reaming to ∅12.0 and drilling after it is pressed in, with an adjustable reamer and a precision holder tool.

Note 2: The substitute S5, S5K, S5K2 piston is an early Minarelli 71.405.0 which equals MMI 4500. It is the same except for thicker rings (2.5 instead of 2.0) and a shorter skirt (16 instead of 17 mm). An old design used by Morini and Minarelli since 1951. Dimensions are 12 mm pin, 22 upper (above the pin), 16 lower (below the pin) and 38.0 diameter, abbreviated as 12-22-16-38.0.

But why are these early Italian 50cc pistons the same dimensions and design as German pistons made by Sachs? In the early 1950’s Vittorio Minarelli visited Fichtel and Sachs in Austria to learn about moped engines. When Minarelli returned he began building engines, along with partner Franco Morini, at FBM in the 1950’s. The Italian engineers used many of German engineer Ernst Sachs production methods and knowledge, like casting and metallurgy, and design principles, like bore and stroke, port timing, sizes and thicknesses, geometry, etc.
