Choke Sticking On: Often the choke sticks on, for no apparent reason. The throttle cable is sometimes too loose to pull up the choke trigger. More often, the choke trigger lever has become bent or twisted. This happens often because great care must be taken to keep the trigger against the side wall when the top assembly (throttle slide, choke trigger, cover assembly) is installed. Before the top screws are tightened, and with one finger holding the top in proper position, it is wise to test the choke by directly pulling on the throttle wire. It should click off at full throttle. Only then should the screws be gently tightened, while holding the top with that finger. If not, then inspect the trigger lever for misalignment, and re-align carefully with small pliers. Sometimes rounding off the side edges helps the trigger lever to not stick also. The last resort is to replace it, but pushing out the tiny hinge pin is difficult. So it is better to straighten it.

Here is the engine side view of a Delorto SHA carburetor. At the base of the vertical brass “spray tube” with one or two holes in it, there is a tiny hole in the silver metal below the brass. It gets overlooked frequently. When it is blocked, the engine will not stay idling for more than a few seconds, but will otherwise run fine if the throttle is kept open.

Dellorto Jets

March 18, 2021

4, 5, or 6 millimeter

Thread Size: Dellorto jets in mopeds come in three thread sizes 4, 5, and 6 millimeter. Each thread size has maybe a hundred different jet sizes. They all fit and look the same but have different size pin holes.

Left, genuine (with “diamond INC” logo)
Right generic (with different or no logo)

Jet Number: Jets have a number stamped on them indicating the hole size. The number can have different meanings for different jet makers.

For generic Dellorto jets the jet number is the mm size.
A generic Dellorto 60 is 0.600 mm.

For genuine Dellorto jets the jet number is less than the mm.
A genuine Dellorto 60 is 0.627 mm.

So a genuine 60 is in-between a generic 62 and 63.
This sounds wrong but is true!

Dellorto Jet Sizes Graph, drawn in 2002

How this was determined: Here is a graph of 17 genuine Dellorto 5mm jets actual sizes. The direct measurement was done with a set of machinists wire gauges, in increments of 0.001″. You can see how the measured sizes fall nicely on two lines. The line for over-56 has less slope than the line for under-56. You can also see what drill sizes correspond to what jet sizes. This study was done in 2002 before there were generic jets. It was surprising to learn that the stamped number did not mean the millimeter size.

Clone Carbs: Some Dellorto SHA clone carburetors have a different jet thread, M5-0.8. But the Runtong (China) SHA clone has the same thread M6-0.75.

Dellorto SHA 12.xx 13.xx

March 18, 2021

The Dellorto SHA 10.xx 12.xx 13.xx carburetor family is like the SHA 14.xx 15.xx family, but more compact. They have a smaller air filter flange, 50mm instead of 58. This style of carburetor was original on all Vespa/Piaggio mopeds 1970’s, 1980’s, 1990’s, and 2000’s. In the USA it was on 1972-86 Vespa mopeds, 1983-86 Garelli VIP-N, and mid 1990’s Kinetic TFR mopeds.

Improved choke: These carburetors have an improved choke release trigger, that cures the sticking trigger lever problem that the 14.xx 15.xx SHA has. Vespa types have a sliding push rod, that moves up a ramp in the throttle slide when the throttle is raised fully. The solid rod pushes the choke lever/plate over a little stop tab. The torsion spring is then free to snap it back off. The top is relatively easy to put on, with only the throttle slide and spring to install, no choke device that gets damaged easy.

Vespa (Piaggio) Carburetors

On 1972-79 Vespa mopeds (US models) there were 3 carb bodies, 7, 10, and 12mm, 5 jet sizes, 39, 41, 43, 45, 49, and 2 air filter boxes, 3-hole and 6-hole. The Boxer had a side-pull carb top assy, like Peugeot. It gives more frame clearance. After 1979 the Boxer became the Si. There were 4 choke levers, Grande, Bravo, Ciao, Boxer. The later Boxer 2 had the linkage type choke with pull wire.

1980s Vespa Carburetors
On 1980-83+ Vespa mopeds (US models) there are 3 carb bodies, 7, 10, and 12mm, 4 jets, 39, 42, 45, 49. The Ciao P and Bravo P had top pull, and Si had a side-pull carb top assy. There are 3 choke levers, Bravo-Ciao, and Si, linkage type, and Grande. There are 2 air filter boxes, 3-hole and 6-hole. Some are newer designs.

First engines by Franco Morini in 1956-57 were mostly the same as 1954-56 Moto FBM. They have very rounded head fins. The differences are: 1) the 3M head has longer fins, 2) 3M has a motor mount, 2) the 3M case has no front mount.

First hourglass logo was on the these 1958 engine covers.

New 50cc bore and stroke: From 1962 to 1978 Franco Morini increased the cylinder bore from 38.0 to 39.0 mm, and decreased the stroke from 42.0 to 41.5 mm. This increased the displacement from 47.7 to 49.6 cc. First was the 3CV in 1962. Then the 3M and 4M series changed in 1969. Then the S5 series changed in 1978. By the 1980’s all 50cc Morini engines had a 39.0 bore.

Ring Information

Pinned or Not Pinned: Most moped piston rings are two-stroke style, where there are pins in the ring grooves of the piston that keep the rings from rotating around. Two stroke cylinders have holes or ports that the ring ends can snag on. So two stroke rings are pinned to the piston. Four stroke cylinders do not have any holes, so four stroke rings are not pinned. Knowing about those pins is important when installing.

Getting the right rings: If your model is not in the applications, then you must measure the bore and the ring thickness. A calipers is the best tool to measure the bore (ring diameter) and ring thickness. Sometimes your rings might not be original, for many reasons. The piston might be aftermarket with thinner rings. The cylinder might be bored out to an oversize bore. Some mopeds came with more than one piston size or ring style.

Break a ring, how not to: Two stroke pistons have little pins (stumps, bumps) in the piston ring grooves that prevent the rings from rotating. Knowing where each ring locating pin is, and aligning the ring gap over the pin during cylinder installation, is the key to not breaking the ring.

Measuring wear: A new piston ring is a the best tool to measure how worn a cylinder is. Conversely, a new cylinder is the best tool to measure how worn a ring is. To measure the wear of a ring, you need a perfectly round cylinder of a precisely known bore. A worn cylinder that has not been honed will still have it’s original new bore at the very top, above where the rings rub at. A new ring in a new cylinder should have a very small end gap of .004 to .008″. A worn but still OK cylinder with a new ring will have a gap of .0010 to .018″. A worn cylinder and ring both will have an end gap of over .020″(.5mm). A badly worn cylinder and/or ring will have a huge gap, over .030″(.75mm). You measure ring gap with a feeler gauge.

Classifying Jawa Rings

Classifying Piston Rings

Classifying rings: Rings get mixed up and are difficult to tell the size, unless a perfectly round cylinder of an appropriate size is available to place the ring in. If you try to squeeze a piston ring into a circle with just fingers, it inevitably becomes a very rounded polygon, or at best an ellipse. So the measurement becomes inaccurate. At right is how Myrons Mopeds’s Jawa piston rings were classified, using a piece of aluminum tubing with a tight fitting piston inside it to hold the tube round, and the test ring square. From top to bottom, 39.03 x 2.0, 39.28 x 2.0, 39.53 x 2.0, 39.78 x 2.0mm. Each ring increases in diameter by 0.25mm, so the circumference increases by Pi times that, or about 0.8mm. Here the inside of an old fishing pole tube is 39.78mm, perfect for the 3rd oversize 39.78 ring, on the bottom, with a gap of almost zero. Each gap is 0.8mm more because each ring is 0.25mm less diameter. It is important that the piston and ring fit the cylinder properly.

Filing down: To make a ring slightly smaller, one of the two ring ends can be filed down, while preserving the shape. To reduce the size (diameter) by 0.20 mm, the end must be filed down by pi times that, 0.63 mm. When a filed down ring is installed in a cylinder smaller than it was designed for, two things change. The tension is greater, and the shape is slightly non-circular. So filed rings need a longer break-in period, to wear down the higher places. With 38 to 41 mm rings, the size can be reduced by 0.2mm with about 30 minutes of break-in, and by 0.5mm with about 2 hours of break-in. After break-in the rings have a mirror polish all around.

Why is the width not specified? Because the inner side of the ring does not touch anything. The ring has spring tension pushing it outwards, keeping the bottom (inner) surface from touching the bottom of the ring groove. So the ring width can be any amount, from about half the groove depth, to the groove depth. The exact ring width is not important. Exact ring height and diameter are important.

Sachs Engine Models

1955 Sachs poster

1. Sachs Engines

Welcome. “Fichtel & Sachs” was founded in 1895 by Ernst Sachs and Karl Fichtel, in Schweinfurt Germany. Ernst Sachs was a racing cyclist and technical wiz, while Karl Fichtel was a business manager. They made hubs and spindles for bicycles and lorries. Ernst Sachs designed and patented a new bicycle hub, the “coaster brake” in 1894, which sold successfully, and also invented the “free-wheel” in 1903. Fichtel died in 1911, and Sachs, in 1932. The first Sachs engine did not come out until 1930.

Sachs introduced their first Saxonette moped in 1937, a 60cc two-stroke 1.2 hp “motor wheel” where the rear wheel and motor were a unit. 320,000 were made in 1937, and 500,000 in 1938. Read more at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sachs_Motorcycles

Sachs engines have the following numbering scheme:  SSX/YZ(W)

  • SS is the engine size 30, 50, 80, 100, 150, 175 (50 for US models)
  • X is the bottom end designation 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 (4, 5 or 8 for US models).
  • Y is the number of speeds 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or A ( 1 or A for US models)
  • Z is the cylinder designation, and represents the speed restrictions applied, and may be A, B, C or D
  • W is an additional designation sometimes included on later models and import models to identify other peculiarities. A “K” for example indicates the kickstart version.

Examples:

  • 301/A   is 30 cc size, type “1” bottom end (rear bicycle wheel), “A” automatic transmission
  • 501/4A is 50 cc size, type “1” bottom end (1960’s   kick-start), “4” speed manual trans.
  • 502/2A is 50 cc size, type “2” bottom end (1960’s with pedals) “2” speed manual trans.

1972 Benelli Dynamo 65cc Parts Manual

1969-75 Dynamo

4M65 engine: Since 1970 the 4M and 4MS 49cc engine size was increased to an advertised 65cc on the 4M65. But the actually size was 59.3cc. Bore and stroke were 44 x 39 mm. That was dishonesty in labeling, motivated by “bigger is better” thinking.

The Benelli 4M65 engine is on 1971-73 Mini Enduro, 1970-72 Cougar, 1970-71 Dynamo Compact, Dynamo Trail (Scrambler), Woodsbike, 1972-73 Compact II, Dynamo II, Woods II, 1974-75 Dynamo Trail, 1976-77 Dynamo. It has large square head, larger piston, Dellorto ME15BS carburetor.

GM engine (Gentlemen Monomarcia 49cc) is on the 1965-69 Benelli Gentlemen (Italy model), father of the Benelli G2. It is also on the 1969 Benelli Maverick (US model), a front-gas-tank version of the Gentlemen. Notice the 1967 spelling of Gentlemen, not Gentleman. The Gentlemen spelling appears in several late 60’s official publications. 1970 official brochures said Gentleman. See Benelli’s with G2, G2K engines. Here we will use Gentlemen for 1960’s and Gentleman for 1970’s.

’70’s Benelli Gentleman (in NZ) with GK engine

The GM engine has a Dansi MDP44 magneto and front-facing Dellorto SHA 14/9 carburetor. It does not have internal pedals. Instead both motor and pedal chains are on the left side, very unusual.

The Gentleman with pedals had a Domino left control with a start lever, instead of a left twist grip start control like the 1965-69 Wards Riverside had. It is visible in the photo. So it’s in bicycle mode all the time, until you pull the start lever.

GK (Gentlemen Kickstart 49cc) engines are on US-model mini-cycles. The kick models do not have pedals or a pedal chain.  The GK and GK-65 engines have a two-piece transmission cover, different than a GM one-piece. They do not have pedals or a pedal chain.

USA mini-cycles with GK and GK65 engines have Dansi ADP244S magnetos and front-facing carburetors, Dellorto SHA 14/12.

GK65 engine: (Gentlemen Kickstart 59cc) engines are on 1970-73 US-model mini-cycles. The model names say “65” but the actual size was 59cc, not 65cc. The bore and stroke are 44 and 39 mm, so (44/2)*(44/2)*3.14*39/1000 = 59.27 cc. The GK and GK-65 engines have a two-piece transmission cover, different than a GM one-piece. They do not have pedals or a pedal chain.

These have Dansi ADP244S magnetos and front-facing carburetors, Dellorto SHA 14/12.

Benelli FA

Benelli models with FA engines 1960?-75

1960's Benelli moped engine

’60’s Benelli FA engine

49cc vertical cylinder 1-speed automatic clutch.

FA engine (Frizone Automatico) engine had an upright slanted forward cylinder, not horizontal like the GM or G2 motor. It was rounded everywhere, not mostly square like the 1970’s motors. The pedals were part of the motor unit, not separate like on the G2.

The 1965-69 Wards Riverside 150D and 250D mopeds, the 1974-75 Benelli 3FA moped. and 1976 Benelli Export FA had FA engines. The left grip was a twist grip that operated the starting clutch. Normally the bike is in pedal mode. Twist the left grip back to engage the motor for starting. Once started it is under automatic clutch control, engaged above 10mph and in neutral below about 5mph. The hand levers are hand brakes, left rear and right front. The controls are early Domino. Throttle is a wrap-around type.

Wards Riverside cylinder and piston

Wards Riverside cylinder and piston

17x12x18 Benelli

The Benelli FA and M4 cylinders are the same as the Benelli M4S cylinder on the 50cc Fireball, except the porting. The Fireball cylinder has a 17mm (for the Dellorto UA16 carb) intake port at the flange, while the FA (and M4?) have a 10mm intake port hole (for a Dellorto 14/12 carb). The exhaust port is taller and wider on the Fireball. The transfer ports and intake port are also wider and maybe taller.

The 1960’s Benelli FA, M4 and M4S piston is the same as the 1970’s Benelli G and G2 piston. They are all 40.0mm bore, 39 stroke, and use the same rings 40 x 1.5 FG. The exhaust has a screw-on mount, with M34-1.5 male thread on the exhaust, female on the cylinder.

1965-67 Wards Riverside (Benelli FA engine)

Mopeds with manual starting clutches usually have an extra hand lever below the left handlebar, for starting. Instead of a start lever, Benelli has a start grip. You pedal the bike, then twist the left grip, to engage the engine. Then let go once the engine has started.

Date: The date of manufacture is not stated on the ID plate or anywhere else on the frame. On 250D models with original speedometers, there may be a date stamped in ink, on the bottom of the speedometer shell. Remove the speedometer to see it.

This is an entire 1965-67 Montgomery Ward Riverside moped parts manual, condensed, colorized with prices, availability and specifications added. It is combined with a 1976 Benelli Export FA engine parts illustration and parts list. In ten years not much changed except the starting clutch and maybe something else.

On parts that have different sizes, the 1976 part numbers say the size in millimeters, here colored in orange.
