Semi-universal: Generic cables are not for any one brand or model. They are often called “universal” because they fit many models. But since they do not fit all brands or models, “semi-universal” is more correct.
Cable ends: Cable ends are molded onto the braided wire permanently. They have different shapes and sizes.
Single end: Generic cables are single-ended. That means one end of the braided inner wire is bare. That allows the wire to slide out and be replaced. All bicycle cables and many moped cables are single ended.
Double end: Some original cables are double-ended, where the inner wire cannot slide out.
Pinch bolts (knarps): These have a screw that tightens onto the cable wire. They can replace a permanent end. See cable parts for more details.
Single end wire with pinch bolt: A single end generic inner wire plus a pinch bolt can replace a broken double end wire. The replacement wire must be at least as long as the original, and the same or less thickness.

Welcome. In the 1970’s USA moped suppliers were all separate companies. If you needed a Cimatti condenser you ordered it from Cimatti. If you needed a Garelli condenser, you ordered it from Garelli. But by the 1980’s moped companies started pulling out of the US market. Marina Mobili Inc. (MMI) in New Jersey, was buying up their inventories and offering parts for almost all mopeds. Moped dealers could order common parts like points, condensers, and spark plugs, all from one supplier. MMI cross referenced the ignition parts and assigned 3-digit “M” part numbers. This breakthrough taught dealers that many things were the same. A Garelli condenser was the same as a Cimatti condenser, since they both have the same MMI part number, M17.
The Ignition Cross Reference Chart was in every semi-annual newsletter-catalog from 1984 to 1989. It was used frequently, or even daily, by moped dealers. Now it is here for you to have and use also.
Points and condensers are explained and also listed in the magnetos sections.
Original items are shown, but only some are sold. Most items for sale are aftermarket replacements.
Bosch (Germany), Iskra (Slovenia), and WTEMCO (Taiwan) all use Bosch-compatible points and condensers.
M19 $16.0 no wire, 1-piece, generic
M32A $15.0 condenser solder-type, generic
0.18 mf, ∅18 x 21, equals 1217 330 035
For 1970’s to 80’s Bosch 90 x 90 mm magnetos.
On Sachs 505, Laura M48, Puch, and Solo moped engines.
M19A $14.0 no wire, 3-piece, for Ø90 flywheel
M36 $12.0 condenser solder-type, generic
0.18 mf, ∅18 x 31, equals 1217 330 037
For ’60’s to early 70’s Bosch 90 x 90 mm magnetos
that had a points pivot post screwed into the stator plate.
For 1977-84 WTEMCO 82 x 90 mm magnetos
On Angel (TYM) and Indian 4-stroke moped engines.
The pivot post can be unscrewed. It takes a 3.2mm e-clip. The newer M19 points are designed to substitute perfectly for M19A, because their bottom pivot exactly fits the older threaded hole.

For 1970’s-80’s Bosch 80 x 80 mm magnetos.
On Sachs 504, Laura M56, Kreidler, and some Minarelli and Morini moped engines.
CEV (Italy) and IDM (Italy-made CEV clone) magnetos have 18.3 mm condenser holes, too big for a press-fit type condenser 18.0 mm. They require a flange type CEV condenser M17 = 07365.
Ducati Elettrotecnica (Italy) and ZEM (Italy-made Ducati clone) magnetos on ’74-86 Tomos mopeds have 17.9 condenser holes, too small for a regular CEV flange type condenser 18.0. They require a slightly smaller CEV-type condenser M17T 17.9 mm. Optionally the condenser hole in the stator base plae can be filed bigger to accept a regular CEV-type M17 condenser.

Novi magnetos are made in France. They are only on Motobecane mopeds.
635 MB points $18 for good-used Novi original
The aftermarket kind has a loose pivot. That
causes poor performance, irregular timing.
Left 16561 round type, to-78 $15.0
Right 24112 square type, 78-on $17.0
Either kind fits and works.
Peugeot made their own magneto. Almost nothing interchanges with other magnetos. The 1970’s mopeds had a two-coil design, with internal transformer spark coil, and M51 condenser. 1980’s had a “star” magneto, with several coils pointing outwards, a M78 condenser, and an external transformer spark coil.
left M52 1975-79 $15.0
right M78 1980-83 $17.0
Peugeot Ignition Upgrade: The internal transformer spark coils deteriorate and allow high voltage sparks to escape out the back side, and into the points and condenser. The Peugeot Ignition Upgrade is essentially converting from a 1970’s to a 1980’s design.
Piaggio made their own magneto. Almost nothing interchanges with other magnetos. There is no base plate. Instead the coils, points, and condenser are mounted directly to the engine case.
The wires deteriorate and turn into green powder, but not the coils. Read more in Vespa-Piaggio

The 1973 A3 was the third Tomos-designed engine, but was the first widely produced. Before the A1 and A3, Tomos made Puch-designed engines and bikes from 1956 to 1981. That’s why some early A3 parts are the same as 60’s Puch, such as the L17 3-piece bearings. In 1986 (and 1985 Golden Bullet) the crank bearings changed from L17 17x40x10 to 6302 17x40x12. The engine cases got 2 mm wider on each side. Servicing was easier and bearings lasted longer. Also in 1986 the carburetor changed from Encarwi to Dellorto. Servicing became more difficult.
Here 9 Tomos USA parts manuals are combined into one. Three illustration versions abc show the changes and improvements made over time, from 1975 to 1991, with a being the newest. Newer part versions have higher part numbers, and are listed first.
9 parts catalogs for 1974-1991 models with A3 engines
This is both a spec sheet with applications, and a list of parts for sale. Many things that say “none” in the price are listed for information purposes. The purpose is to possibly find substitutes by knowing the original part specifications. Sometimes parts can have different part numbers, but the difference is something minor that does not matter, or can be adapted. Some folks have parts, or see a part for sale, where the part number is known but not what models it’s for or could fit.

#9 Roller Clutch: This is installed with the side with writing on it facing inward, and the no-writing side facing outward. It allows the clutch drum to spin freely in the clockwise direction, but locks solid in the counter-clockwise direction.
#3 shim washer: In the 1970’s, 212957, 212958 and 212959 crankshaft shims were mainly for adjusting the play (looseness) in the L17 (3-piece angular contact) crank bearings, but also for centering the crank in the cases. In the 1980’s Tomos decided the thinner shims 212957 and 212958 were not needed, and discontinued them in the 1984 parts catalog. Two years later in 1985-86 the bearings changed to 6203 (1-piece full contact) type, that do not require side-to-side adjustment of play. The 212959 shim was only for centering the crank in the cases.
#10 shim washer: In the 1970’s, 209073 and 209119 first speed clutch shims were thinner and had smaller increments. A stack of of maybe 3 or 5 was required. In the 1980’s they had the same part numbers, but were made thicker, so less were required, maybe 1 or 2.

Original sprockets have a flat center. Transmission oil is sealed mostly by metal-to-metal. The inner side of the washer #19 seals against the outer side of the sprocket #18. The inner side of sprocket #18 seals against the spacer #17, which seals against the bearing #17, as long as the nut #20 is tight and the sprocket center is not wavy on either side. There is also a seal in the left needle bearing 035502. But it does not hold the oil by itself.
Aftermarket sprockets have a wavy center. That causes oil to leak. The remedy is to change the spacer 209077 to the o-ring type and add the o-ring 033007. That is what Tomos did after 2007, when their original sprockets were no longer made with flat centers. See more about this is at A55 Trans Oil Leak. Another remedy, maybe less effective but easier, is to clean off the oil and use liquid gasket sealer on both sides of the sprocket center. Many aftermarket sprockets also fit loosely, so they’re not centered. That makes the chain pulsate, where it gets slightly tigher and looser every revolution. When the sprocket is centered the chain runs smooth.

1986 was the debut of solid-state voltage regulation, where all the lights are powered by one generator wire. This eliminated the need for multiple lighting output wires and source coils. The generator makes enough watts for all the lights to be on at once. But most of the time some of the lights are turned off. Then the extra watts are absorbed by the regulator, and “wasted” by warming up the frame. So the lights always stay the same brightness, no matter how many are on or off. No more external ignition ground means the engine never looses spark because of the lights, like a pre-1987 Tomos sometimes did.

Controls in this T family are on 2002 to 2017 Tomos mopeds, sold in the US and Canada.
Column D Tomos 2002-07 Hydraulic Front Brake Models: The first US models of Tomos Revival 2002-07, Streetmate 2005-07 and Arrow 2005 had Domino controls, made in Italy. Domino controls can be identified by the yellow horn and engine stop buttons.
Column T Tomos 2006-17 Hydraulic Front Brake Models: Later those controls were superseded by Domino clones, made in China by TBS, on the 06-07 Arrow-R, 07 Streetmate, 07 Revival and all 2008-17 models. TBS controls can be identified by the red horn and engine stop buttons.
Column T Tomos 2007-17 Cable Front Brake Models: From late 2007 to 2017 the controls on Tomos Sprint, ST and LX models were Domino clones, made in China by TBS. TBS controls can be identified by the red horn and engine stop buttons.
What’s the difference? The TBS control parts interchanged with Domino except for:
1) Brake light switch threads: Domino is American 1/4 – 32, TBS is metric M6-0.80.
2) Right mirror threads: Domino is M8-1.25 left hand, TBS is M8-1.25 right hand.
3) Pivot bolt: Domino is M6, TBS is M5 with ∅6 shoulder.
4) Switches: Do not interchange.

Lost Keys on Streetmate: The faux tank lid can bend enough to open without a key. Pull upward on the middle of both sides. Once inside the faux tank lift up the floor mat on the left side. That exposes a lot of wires and connector plugs. Locate the green connector plug. Unplug it. The bike will then kick start and run without a key. Only the headlight will operate normally. The other lights will be dim.
Please note the push button on a brake light switch is normally (most of the time) pushed in when installed. It is only momentarily released out when the brake is applied. That is opposite of most other push buttons. To avoid this source of confusion you have to add “when installed” to specify the way it functions. A normally closed switch is normally open when installed and visa versa.
These brake light switches are located on the hand levers.
Tip color: On vintage European moped brake light switches, the color of the tip tells the function. Black tip is normally open when installed. White or brass tip is normally closed when installed.
Threads: Vintage moped controls, made in Germany by Magura and in Italy by Domino, OSL, and PV, and modern Domino controls, have “inch” threads on the brake light switch holes, ¼”- 32 tpi. A ¼” (6.3 mm) brake switch measures 6.1 to 6.2 mm at the thread tops.

’08-17 Tomos threads: Modern TBS controls used on 2008 and later Tomos, made in Taiwan presumably, which are otherwise Domino-compatible, have “metric” threads on the brake light switch holes, M6-0.80. An M6 (6.0 mm) brake switch measures 5.8 to 5.9 mm at the thread tops. An M6-0.80 brake switch will screw into a 1/4″-32 hole, but not visa versa. So 2008-later Tomos controls must have only that 243841 switch.

“normally open when installed” is also known as “on in paused position”. When the brake lever is squeezed, the switch button is not pressed (paused), and the switch is closed (on). That makes the brake light go on, because the brake switch is wired in series with the light. With two switches, they are wired in parallel with each other, and in series with the light.
“normally closed when installed” is also known as “off in paused position”. When the brake lever is squeezed, the switch button is not pressed (paused), and the switch is open (off). That makes the brake light go on, because the brake switch is wired in parallel with the light. With two switches, they are wired in series with each other, and in parallel with the light.

Integrated controls means the electrical buttons and switches are part of the twist throttle and hand levers, rather than separate. The purpose of integrated controls is to locate the switches close to the operator’s thumbs, for increased safety and convenience, and to reduce cost and save space on the handlebar. Motorcycles had this first, because they have more buttons, generally. While the European switches below can be replaced separately from the controls, with most Taiwan and Japanese mopeds you had to buy the whole control assembly to get new switches and buttons. More on that will be in the Taiwan Mopeds parts department.
Switches in this section can fit on Domino diamond controls.
They can also be mounted directly to the handlebar by drilling holes and using a diamond direct mount.

The wires must to be soldered on skillfully. Use CEV 8176 above as a substitute.
By the end of the 1970’s, the shape of pretty much everything from toasters to automobiles, that used to be rounded, was straight. Many things that were metal became plastic. On Garelli mopeds, the all curved Garelli “Oval Chrome” switch shape was modernized to CEV “Diamond Plastic”, with the same 36mm bolt spacing. The new design was much stronger and more resistant to breaking, because the sliding switch had a large platform that almost touches the base. The newer “knobs” are low and wide, not tall and thin.

At right, it’s European all-icon cousin. Over there they signal by momentarily flashing their high beam, rather than by horn. So their buttons have different functions. By 1984-85 Europe already had all-icon switches, a few years before the USA allowed them.

Icons appeared first on US mopeds in 1985 on Trac/Daelim, then in 1987 on Derbi Variant Sport and DS50. In the 1980’s the world somehow realized it made more economic sense for motorcycle switches to use symbols, with one version for all, rather than using words and having to make many language versions. By the 1990’s the US had switched to icons, at the time when Tomos and Jawa were the only European mopeds remaining. There were several “remakes”: Kinetic (India) is like Vespa/Piaggio, Manet (Slovakia) is like Puch, Hero (India) is like Puch, and others. Some of those copied “80’s – 90’s Domino” controls. These HR (Hidria Rotomatika) switches below do not interchange with Domino. The HR switches are slightly smaller than Domino, and their top peg is smaller. HR switches must go on HR controls, aka “1992-2007 Tomos” controls.
