Minarelli C2 specs

The C2 was on only a few deluxe US moped models. It has the same all-iron cylinder, piston, “square” head, intake, carburetor, fan, and magneto as a “late” 1979-1985 V1. But the transmission and engine case is much different and longer. The bore is 38.8, not 38.7. The sprocket is 13T, not 11T.

Once again Minarelli made a two speed moped engine, but sales were less than they hoped for. The huge extra cost of the variator drive made it less affordable for most people. Morini had also made the M101, a two speed variator engine, and the MO2 two speed. But the Morini M1 reed valve one speed had better average acceleration than the Morini MO1 piston port two speed did, for a much lower cost and weight. By the late 1980’s, wise Minarelli gave up on two speeds, and “saw the light” of the one speed with case reed induction.

1. 1963-67 Minarelli P4, P4S, P4SS

P4 has a 4-speed, foot-shift, manual clutch, kick start. All P4 crankshafts and cases have a width of 32mm between the bearings. P6 is wider, 36mm. Early P4 crankshafts have a 13mm right cone. In 1971 it became 15mm.

P4S changes: The carburetor and intake changed from Dellorto SHA 14/12 to UA19S side-float type. The cylinder, piston and rings changed changed from 38.0 x 2.5 to 38.8 x 1.5. The compression ratio increased from 7.7 to 9.0. The head changed from small round fins M2-40 to bigger straight fins M24-12. The exhaust nut thread changed from M28 to M32. The nut goes over the pipe, so the pipe is smaller than that.

Top: 1965 Italjet Vampiro racer with P4 60 CA Cadetti (piston port induction) engine. The intake goes to the cylinder. The caption says “The Italjet Vampiro with Minarelli 60 engine presented in Monza shortly before the 1965 Milan Show. It will sell for 180 lire including the plastic fairing. Bore and stroke dimensions 41.4 x 44mm = 59.2cc. Note the built continuous double cradle frame and the four-shoe front brake.”

Bottom: 1967 Minarelli factory racer with P4 60 (rotary induction) engine. The intake goes to the crankcase. The caption says “The “lamellar” Minarelli prepared for the 1967 season has the same bore and stroke measurements as the conventionally fueled model, but delivers 9.5 HP at 10,800 rpm against the 9.0 at 10,800 rpm of the “first manner” Italjet which will also be referred to later. It comes from the “lamellar” propeller (rotary induction), with the 17 mm carburetor in direct communication with the crank arm. Always with 4% lubrication.”

In the 70’s and 80’s this engine was incorrectly referred to as a reed valve (lamellare) type, but it did not have a reed valve. Only 60 of these factory racers had this different intake system, according to moto gran premio e 50iniInstead of piston-controlled intake (induction), it had crankshaft-controlled (rotary valve) induction. That’s what Vespa Ciao had since 1968, and Yamaha had since 1961. The reed valve had not been invented yet. It was later invented by Yamaha and first produced in 1972.

Motori Minarelli is born: In 1967 the company name and logo changed, from F.B. Minarelli to Motori Minarelli. Above in the 1967 ad they showed off their new logo by making it as big as possible, filling an entire page width.

3. 1967-70 Minarelli P4S, P4S-al, P4S-70

Late P4S changes: This ’67-73 late P4S is 95% the same as ’65-67 P4S. Only some kick start and gearshift parts are different. This is evident from the illustrations and part numbers.

4. 1971-75 Minarelli P4V, P4V-70, P4V-75

Minarelli part numbers changed sometime around 1970.

P4V changes: The ’60’s rounded engine covers became angular, to fit the same rounded cases. In 1971 the crankshaft changed from axe (mannaia) shaped, also called pork chop shaped. The piston pin bushing 38.0005.0 changed to a needle bearing 38.0017.0.

Note 1. Indian Service Bulletin SVB-153: In March 1974 the flywheel key 2300.1024 changed  to 2301.1024, slightly shorter. That improved the seating (fit) of the flywheel, so it had less tendency of becoming loose and damaging the key and key groove.

Note 2: Indian Service Bulletin SVB-153: In March 1974 the pinion gear key 2110.1023 was eliminated. It is not needed as long as the pinion gear nut is tight. The key was on the ’67-70 P4S but was already eliminated on the ’71-75 P4V. That’s why there is only a 1960’s Minarelli part number for it.

Note 3. The genuine Dellorto SHA14/12 carburetor comes with a 52 jet, ∅18 sleeve, no air cover, no cable pipe. The F27 air cover is required for the correct air/fuel mixture. For a full parts list see Carb/Dellorto/SHA14.

P4V gears: P4V gears 1 to 4 had a 56 tooth total for each pair, 23+33, 27+29, 30+26, 33+23.

5. 1971-79 Minarelli P4E, P4E-al, P4A

P4E changes: The engine case changed from round to angular. The cylinder hole grew from ∅44 to ∅47. The cylinder studs grew from 40×40 to 48×48. This made room for bigger ports for more power, and made bigger bores 70 or 75cc possible, also for more power. The pork-chop all-needle-bearing P4V crankshaft became a full circle type. The exhaust bolts to the cylinder with a 3-bolt flange, instead of screwing on with a special inverted nut.

1. F.B.M. P48 1954-56

This had one speed, manual clutch with pedals. The design is based on a 1950’s Sachs moped engine.

In 1956 Fabbrica Bolognese Motocicli split into F.B. Minarelli and Motori Franco Morini.

2. Minarelli E48 1956-57

This had a two-speed cable-shift, manual clutch. It is basically a P3 with one gear missing.

The new F.B. Minarelli logo was a triangle with wings. This was stamped or cast onto most of the engine parts. 1970’s and 80’s Motori Minarelli parts with this logo were originally on a 1960’s F.B. Minarelli model.

3. Minarelli P3, P3-KS 1957-68?

This was a 3-speed hand-grip-shift, manual clutch, with pedals or with kick start. There were two head versions, with a motor mount and without.

FBMMoto F.B.M. (Fabbrica Bolognese Motocicli) 224 Via Battindarno, Bologna, Italy was founded in 1951 by Vittorio Minarelli and Franco Morini, nephew of Alphonso Morini. The company FBM (1951-1956) produced only motorcycle engines, two-stroke (2T) 50, 75, 100, 160 and four-stroke (4T) 100, 125, 160, 175 and 200 cc.

Testi and Sachs helped Minarelli: Since 1933 Testi was a bicycle company owned by Umberto Testi. Umberto’s son Erio Testi worked in his fathers bicycle factory. In 1953 Umberto sent his son Erio Testi to Austria to visit Fichtel and Sachs, and learn about small two stroke engines. After Erio returned, he was hired by Moto FBM, and transferred the Sachs two stroke moped engine manufacturing knowledge to his friend Vittorio Minarelli. That’s why early 60’s Morini, Minarelli and Sachs pistons have the same dimensions.

Moto F.B.M.P-48: In 1954 the P-48 Pettirosso (red breast) was born, a 50cc 2-stroke 2-speed cable-shift engine, destined to become the engine for most popular mopeds in Europe, and later the P3 3-speed version.

Minarelli’s assistant Erio Testi helped develop those FBM moped engines, then later formed his own successful company. That is why Testi bikes all have Minarelli engines.

FBM split: In 1956 Moto FBM (Fabbrica Bolognese Motocicli) split into Fabbrica Bolognese Minarelli and Motori Morini Franco.

F. B. Minarelli (Fabbrica Bolognese Minarelli) 23 Via Melozzo da Forlì, Bologna, Italy was only four blocks away, formed in 1956 from the separation of Minarelli and Morini. The bike maker clients were divided equally in volume, Morini got Beta, Minarelli got the others.

From Wikipedia: In 1956 Minarelli switched to exclusively manufacturing two-stroke engines, in a 20,000 sq. ft. purpose-built factory. It employed 20 technical staff and produced 70 engines a day. These were sold to companies in Italy, other parts of Europe and South America.

Motori MinarelliIn 1967 the company changed its name from F.B. Minarelli to Motori Minarelli, and opened a new plant about 5 miles north, in Calderara di Reno. By the 1970s engine production had reached 250,000 units a year.

Minarelli successfully competed in Grand Prix motorcycle racing with Spanish rider Ángel Nieto winning 125cc world championships in 1979 and 1981.

In 1990 the company began a business relationship with Yamaha. Five years later it employed 350 people and engine production had reached 450,000 units a year.

In 2002, following changes in the world motorcycle market, Motori Minarelli became a member of the Yamaha Group.

By the late 1980’s, mopeds were out of style, and scooters were popular. Minarelli made 49cc two-stroke scooter engines with variators all through the 1990’s and most of the 2000’s. Minarelli has always been behind the scenes, making engines for “everybody”, but not advertising or taking much credit. Many people who own certain scooters don’t know their engine is made by humble and wise Minarelli.

Benelli US Models 49 to 1130 cc

January 13, 2021

Cosmopolitan Motors: Benelli mopeds and motorcycles were imported to the USA from about 1965 to 1988 by Cosmopolitan Motors in Hatboro PA. Cosmo sold the Automatic, Maverick, 3FA, Blazer, G2 and C2 pedal-start mopeds, and the 3VK kick-start moped. They also sold many different Benelli mini cycles and trail bikes, plus Benelli 250 twin, 250 and 500cc 4-cylinder, 750 and 900cc 6-cylinder sport motorcycles.

J.C. Penney: In the late 1960’s and early 70’s JC Penney department stores sold Benelli Buzzer, Dynamo, Hurricane, Volcano mini-cycles and Cougar trail bike in their auto centers.

Montgomery Ward: The Wards department store line was named “Riverside”. The earliest Wards Riverside models were scooters made by Japan’s Mitsubishi and Italy’s Bianchi companies, and mopeds made by France’s Motobecane. Those pre-1965 France-made Wards Riverside mopeds are completely different from the 1965-67 Benelli-made Wards Riverside mopeds.

Wards Riverside Benelli: In 1965, Wards changed manufacturers and opted to sell mostly machines from the Italian company Benelli. Benelli offered mopeds and a line of single cylinder motorcycles 50-360cc. The Benelli line plus a Lambretta scooter allowed Wards to compete in the marketplace with the Austrian Puch mopeds and motorcycles that Sears was selling under their Allstate brand.

By 1970 the moped and motorcycle sales went away for the department store retailers, and for European manufacturers in general, primarily due to the Japanese invasion with highly engineered, reliable and powerful 4 stroke motorcycles under the likes of Honda, Yamaha and Suzuki. Also, in 1970 the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was created to oversee and combat increasing pollution and air quality issues. Smokey two stroke motorcycles and other high emission vehicles would be the first targets.

History

benelli

Benelli began in 1911 as a family repair shop for motorcycles and bicycles. By 1940 they made a winning supercharged 250cc 4-cylinder racing motorcycle. So they are to be admired like Ferarri and Ducati are.

Here is the Benelli story at Wikipedia.org.
Here is an excellent display of Benelli motorcycles and paraphernalia. Benelli Motorcycle Shrine by Steven Salemi.
Here is a link to the official Benelli Museum, 1970’s mopeds section.

Motobi: In World War Two the Benelli factory in Pesaro Italy was totally destroyed. After the war the factory was rebuilt, but there was discord between the six Benelli brothers. In 1949, Guiseppe Benelli left to form his own company, Motobi. After 13 years of success, Motobi was failing financially, and in 1962 was acquired by Benelli. The combined Motobi-Benelli company produced around 300 motorcycles a day and had 550 employees. Motobi designs continued in production under the Benelli name. After 1962 both names were used by the same factory, Fratelli Benelli S.p.A. Pesaro Italy.

SEIMM (Società Esercito Industrie Moto Meccaniche): The 1970’s were hard times for European motorcycle manufacturers. Low cost and high quality or higher performance machines from Japanese makers took away millions of sales. SEIMM was an Italian government controlled company that would take ownership of failing Italian motorcycle manufacturers. In the 1950’s and early 60’s Benelli and Moto Guzzi were competitors that made similar products. But in the hard times of the “Japanese invasion” they were partners, and shared their rights and resources. That is why the 1978-80 Benelli G2 and Moto Guzzi Robin mopeds are identical.

1981 laws worldwide for manufacturers came into effect for motor vehicles worldwide, made after 1980, including the 17-digit VIN, and noise labeling. Like most other moped makers, to avoid the hassle, SEIMM made and stockpiled 2 or 3 years worth of 1980 models, and sold them in the following years as 1981 and 82 models.

Superb handling: Benelli motorcycles are known for their superb handling. That has a lot to do with the quality of the metal, something you can’t see in photos or spec sheets. In the US, Benelli is most known for it’s awesome 6-cylinder motorcycles, the 750 and 900 Sei, from 1976 to 1984 (1973 to 1989 worldwide). Kawasaki and Honda also had six-cylinder bikes during that period, that went faster but did not handle as well as Benelli’s.

1983 Benelli 900 Sei

1982 USA laws banned two-stroke, on-road, over-50cc motorcycle engines. This caused manufacturers who made only, or mostly two-stroke motorcycles, like Piaggio and Benelli, to pull out of the US in the mid-1980’s. This is why there are no 65cc to 125cc models in the USA models list after 1981.

Bigger is better: As the years went by, motorcycle engines kept growing bigger. In the 1960’s a 250 was a big bike. In the 1980’s a 250 was small. Especially in the USA, the demand was for bigger, more powerful bikes. The manufacturers were like in a arms race. That is partly why there are no small or mid-sized Benelli motorcycles in the 1980’s USA. It is funny, and a little sad, that in the mid-1980’s USA, if you wanted to buy a new Benelli, you had to choose between a G2 moped that went 30mph, or a 900 Sei sport bike that went 130mph!

Procedure for 1980-83 flywheel installing:

First make sure the flywheel nut can screw on the threads normally. They can be damaged.

1. Remove the spark plug anduse a small screwdriver to feel where the top pof the piston is at.

2. Park the piston at top. Go back and forth to find the dead center.

3. The case mark is a trianglular notch. The flywheel mark is a line with a clockwise arrow.    Clean the tapered shaft and the the tapered flywheel hole.

4. Place the flywheel on the shaft with the flywheel mark 0.9 to 1.0 inch to the right of the case mark.

5. Strike the center of the flywheel. It will stick to the shaft.

6. Install a piston stop tool into the spark plug hole. It stops the piston from rising.

7. Rotate the flywheel clockwise until the piston contacts the stop.

8. Tighten the nut.

9. Remove the piston stop.
