Semi-universal: Generic cables are not for any one brand or model. They are often called “universal” because they fit many models. But since they do not fit all brands or models, “semi-universal” is more correct.

Cable ends: Cable ends are molded onto the braided wire permanently. They have different shapes and sizes.

Single end: Generic cables are single-ended. That means one end of the braided inner wire is bare. That allows the wire to slide out and be replaced. All bicycle cables and many moped cables are single ended.

Double end: Some original cables are double-ended, where the inner wire cannot slide out. 

Pinch bolts (knarps): These have a screw that tightens onto the cable wire. They can replace a permanent end. See cable parts for more details.

Single end wire with pinch bolt: A single end generic inner wire plus a pinch bolt can replace a broken double end wire. The replacement wire must be at least as long as the original, and the same or less thickness.
