A3 or A4 for Motobecane: 1970’s sheet-frame Motobecanes use a A3 type vertical valve, but not in a vertical orientation. Instead it is almost horizontal, at about 70 degrees from vertical. So a spigot-back valve fuel hose goes down, not back. An A4 10 x 1 spigot-left is a better replacement choice. With A3 the fuel hose goes down first, and then slightly uphill before it curves down into the Gurtner carburetor. With A4 the fuel hose goes forward first, and then slightly down hill before curving down to the carb. The A4 allows the fuel hose to be empty when the tank is empty. The A3 with a U-shape hose routing would trap some liquid, just like under a sink drain. Then the bike would have to be leaned to the right to empty the fuel hose completely.

Side cover grinding: With all replacement petcocks the Motobecane 50 or 40 left side cover must be modified. The front side of the petcock slot must be have about 1/8″ (3 mm) cut off.  See the above photo.

This valve fits hundreds of mopeds and mini-cycles. It fits any tank with a 10×1 threaded hole, and with nothing below or near the valve that would interfere.

Motobecane 7 rear tanks have a side wall that is very close to the petcock threaded hole. Modern petcocks are too wide to screw in unless they are first disassembled. Once the handle, face cover, nut, spring and shaft-plate are carefully removed, the bare valve body is small enough to screw into the tank. Then the pieces must be put back in the same order and orientation as they came out.

Cimatti rear tanks have a 10×1 threaded hole, but there is a nearby “wall” that prevents a 10×1 male valve from screwing in, unless the whole gas tank is removed. That requires rear wheel and rear fender removal. To make gas valve installation easy, Cimatti added a screw-in 10-to-12 adaptor piece, and used a 12×1 female type gas valve, with a turnbuckle type nut. Only the nut turns, and the “wall” does not matter. So it is much better to reuse the 10-to-12 adaptor, and use a 12×1 spigot right or down valve instead.

Taiwan Moped Locks and Keys

July 7, 2022

Taiwan-made mopeds have steering locks. They lock the fork in the turned position. Some also have an electrical switch that disconnects the battery. Like the rest of the bike the fork lock is the same as on some Japan-made motorcycles or mopeds. The locks have a key number stamped next to the keyhole. Missing keys can be ordered by the key number on the lock.

Pedal Shafts, Freewheels and Chain Tensioners

July 4, 2022

1  P E D A L   S H A F T S

Some mopeds with external pedal shafts, and separate pedal and motor chains, have one of the crank arms permanently attached to the shaft and sprocket. With those, to get a new sprocket-side arm you have to replace the shaft-with-arm.

Some mopeds with external pedal shafts, and separate pedal and motor chains, have no crank arms permanently attached to the shaft and sprocket. With those the sprocket-side arm can be replaced.

More on this parts topic, later…

2  F R E E W H E E L S

Some mopeds have one drive chain and some have two. Two-chain mopeds, with both a motor chain and a pedal chain, have freewheels, like most bicycles. The freewheel is the rear pedal sprocket that spins free and goes “click click click” in the reverse direction, but locks up solid in the forward direction. The freewheel allows the pedals to be stationary even when the rear wheel is moving forward. The moped brands with right-side freewheels are Puch, Peugeot, Motobecane, Batavus, Sparta (Foxi), Hercules (Sachs), Piaggio (Vespa), Honda (PA50), Kreidler, KTM (Foxi), Kynast, Flandria. There are two brands with left-side backward freewheels, Jawa and Benelli. All of the other moped brands do not have external freewheels, but instead have a freewheel mechanism inside the engine unit.

The freewheel screws on and tightens with pedaling. Once it is tight, a special tool is required to remove it. The tool fits into slots in the freewheel center. Some low-end modern single-speed bicycle freewheels do not have removal slots. Those cheap kinds can be removed by destroying the freewheel. To remove a freewheel destructively without a removal tool, the freewheel is first disassembled, where all the little balls and clickers fall out, and then the inner hub is unscrewed in a bench vise or with a pipe wrench.

Most freewheels go on the right side of the bike and thus have right-hand thread, but Jawa and Benelli ones go on the left side of the bike and have left-hand thread.

Freewheel threads: Like with pedal threads there is a common size and an uncommon size slightly smaller.

The common size is 1.375″ – 24, which equals 34.92 – 1.06 mm. Most modern bicycles worldwide have this ISO (International Standards Organization) standard freewheel thread type.

The uncommon size is M34.7 – 1.00, which equals 34.70 – 1.00 mm. This “French” thread type is on vintage bicycles from France, Belgium, Spain or Switzerland, and on Motobecane mopeds with Motobecane-made hubs.

So the French freewheels are slightly smaller than the rest of the world, 34.7 instead of 34.9. That small amount does not matter as long as the bike is pedaled gently. But it does matter when the pedals are pushed very hard. Then the loose fitting threads on the wheel hub can strip out, a disaster.

It is difficult to tell which thread type a hub has, by measuring the thread tops with a calipers. The 34.92 thread hubs measure 34.65 to 34.7. The 34.70 hubs measure 34.55 to 34.6. On some hubs the tops of the threads are worn down and measure less. So a standard thread might seem like a French thread type. Because of this, it is better to put away the calipers and use “feel”.

When the freewheel and hub have the same thread type, the freewheel screws on easy, yet has no looseness. Looseness is felt with fingertips pulling and pushing the freewheel center side to side. When a 34.92 freewheel is on a 34.7 hub, the center of the freewheel can move 0.22 mm.  Here is a video of that. That looseness or “wiggle” is felt. The same is true for any threaded thing. When a bolt fits a nut, it screws on easy and yet does not wiggle.

All of the freewheels in Myrons Mopeds inventory were measured by feel. For each bike model listed above, a sample rear wheel with original freewheel was measured directly by feel. The freewheel was removed. It’s threads were checked by screwing onto both a French and a standard hub. The wheel threads were checked by screwing on both a French and a standard freewheel.

Not shown, Puch wheels and hubs, Sparta, Peugeot 102 hub, Kreidler, Sachs, KTM, Kynast, others.

Result: None of the hubs or freewheels had French thread, except Motobecanes with Motobecane-made hubs. Wow!

Result: All Leleu-made hubs have standard freewheel thread 1.375″-24, even those for Motobecane. All Motobecane-made hubs have French thread M34.7-1.0. All Motobecane-made “6-star” mag wheels have standard thread, but it is tapered and begins with French thread, so that either type of freewheel can be used.

How to tell: The best way to tell if a 1970’s Motobecane moped rear hub is Motobecane-made (and therefore French thread) is visually. There is an prominent M logo on the freewheel side. There is no step on the freewheel side, instead it slopes gradually. The flanges go farther out from the spoke holes. So from 100 feet away, viewed from the side, the Motobecane-made hubs appear larger than Leleu-made hubs.

Summary

All two-chain rear hubs or wheels, on mopeds from the 1970’s and 80’s, have standard freewheel threads, except Motobecane-made hubs on 1950’s -60’s and some 1970’s Motobecane mopeds.

A standard thread freewheel fits a French thread hub and works fine when pedaled normally. Only when a strong athletic person pedals very hard, the hub threads can strip off, requiring wheel or hub replacement.

Motobecane 100mm hubs
are also French thread

1950’s – 60’s Motobecane: Many models, maybe all, had French freewheel threads M34.7-1.0. In the 1960’s the parts manuals specified the thread. One example, shown at right, is for Motobecane AV88 and Motoconfort AU88. It lists the 18-tooth 15244 freewheel as having M34.7-100 thread.

The French freewheel thread cover up: It is very odd that, after 1976-77, Motobecane had two different freewheel threads, but they hid that fact. Instead they made the teeth different, 15244 (French thread) was 18 teeth, and the newer 14298 (standard thread) was 20 teeth. The Motobecane America parts manuals list both freewheels without explanation. There does not seem to be anything about freewheels in the Parts or Service Bulletins. The physical freewheels do not say the thread. The actual parts labels do not say the thread either. As a result, this cover-up has caused confusion and mystery for 39 years (1978-2017).

Gas Valve for sheet frame is located on the left front, close to the decompression valve and start cable. The original had the hose spigot on the right, heading toward the carburetor. Although right is prefered, the replacement gas valve can have the hose spigot going down or left. Shown above is a “12×1 spigot down” replacement petcock, on a yellow Columbia.

Gas tank vent: When adding gas, press the vent button under the seat to let air escape. Otherwise, air will prevent gas from filling the back half of the U-shaped tank. The vent has a light spring that automatically allows air to go in as gasoline goes out.

Gas tank: Tube frame tanks must mix the gas and oil in a gas can, because the tank is too long and thin for the oil to get to the back part and dissolve evenly.

Gas Valve is a vertical type valve used in a nearly horizontal position. It is located on the left rear, near the left pedal. Here it is shown (broken) on a black Columbia. The handle lever gets kicked and broken easily. Care must be taken to not kick it when stepping through the frame.

1-chain hub sprockets for 420 or 420H chain are 5.5 mm thick, thicker than most mopeds.

Wheels with Italy-made steel 1-chain hubs

Some models in family 2, such as this ’79 Imperial, came with an Italy-made steel 1-chain hub on the rear, and a USA-made 2-chain type aluminum hub on the front. So they were sometimes substituting parts.

Wheels 2-chain: 3. 2200-C + 280,
4. 2240/50 + 340, 5. 2260/70, 6. 2280

aluminum 2-chain hubs made in USA by Columbia

The rear brake and sprocket are both on the left. The hub center is small 28mm stepping to 24mm in the center. The step retains the lip-less sealed bearings, and so no adapter sleeves are needed.

2-chain hub sprockets for 415 or 415H chain are 4.3 mm thick, and have a 115mm center hole, bigger than any other moped sprocket. That is because of the oversize 105mm drum brake that goes inside the sprocket. Having the brake and sprocket on the same side allows the opposite side to have a screw-on freewheel sprocket for a pedal chain.

Brakes made in USA by Columbia are compatible with Grimeca brakes made in Italy. The cast aluminum Italian-made Grimeca brake shoes on the early 1976-78 sheet-metal-frame Columbias, directly replace the stamped steel American-made brakes on the monotube-frame and late 1978-80 sheet-frame Columbias. The USA made brake plates, cam shafts, lever arms, are also each interchangable with Grimeca items, but the axles are different 12.0 mm on the American-made hub, and 12.7 mm (1/2 inch) on the Italian-made Grimeca hub.

Sachs engine Columbia: On Columbia with Sachs engine, the throttle cable carburetor end passes through a M6-0.75 thread adjuster on the Bing carb elbow, so the adjuster is not trapped on the cable, and is sold separately. The carb elbow, aka curved pipe, can be either short or long. So there are two different throttle cables, short or long. The difference is 1/2 inch of exposed inner wire.

Solo engine Columbia: On Colombia with Solo engine, the throttle cable carburetor end passes through the a M6-0.75 thread adjuster on the top of the carburetor. So the adjuster is not part of the cable, unlike Puch, and like on the Colombia with Sachs engine.

Horn was first located on the right side of the engine in ’76-78, because of CEV round bullet headlight. During 1978 the headlight changed to Peterson rectangular. That allowed the horn to be behind the headlight because there was more room. The horn wires changed in the wiring harness, and also the switches.

Electrical: Columbia lights are completely separate from the ignition. Never will the engine die when the brakes are applied or when the brake light wires are loose, like on many other mopeds. Each of the lights has it’s own generator wire, so they are independent of each other. The 6V 22W AC yellow wire powers the head light, speedo light and horn, the 6V 10W AC green (and green/black) powers the brake light, and the 6V 5W grey wire powers the tail light. Those three lighting source coils, plus a fourth ignition source coil (perhaps 20 volts but not officially rated), comprise the “Bosch 6V 22-5/10” magneto-generator.
