The first Mosquito was a friction-drive compact motor kit that attached to most bicycles.
From Stingers by Mark Daniels: Unveiled at the Geneva Show in March 1947, from the house of Adalberto Garelli, with Carlo Alberto Gilardi as Chief Engineer to the project, the tiny type 307 clip-on motor was another instant success. Less than a mere 4 inches wide and weighing in at barely 4 kilogrammes, its 35 millimetre bore × 40 millimetre long-stroke specification of 5.5:1 compression ratio gave 0.8bhp @ 4,200rpm for 20mph, and the Dell’orto carburettor delivered around 200mpg economy!
News of the Mosquito motor rippled across Europe, as journalists, impressed by the design and novelty of such a tiny motor, widely reported the engine in the motor cycling press. A small column in The Motor Cycle dated 8 January 1948 would seem to be among the first introductions to enthuse over Garelli’s ingenuity to its British readership, while the Sterling Engineering Company of Dagenham entered speculative negotiations to try to make and sell Mosquito engines under licence onto the UK market, but their project was not secured.
Unprecedented continental uptake of the engine, however, quickly found Garelli appreciating their position was failing to keep up with demand, particularly from France, where the Mosquito had become popularly adopted.

Solution to the supply problem came about by Garelli granting a manufacturing license to Etablissements Chapuis Frères, a long established maker of bicycles, at 24 Avenue de Neuilly, Neuilly-sur-Seine. To protect Garelli’s name and reputation, the license came with demanding conditions requiring Chapuis lay out an entirely new factory to build the Mosquito engine, and expecting both high tooling standards, and machining facilities.
By 1950, Chapuis Frères had founded the plant, and selling not only their licence-built Mosquito engine attachment kits with Gurtner manufactured carburettors license-built to the original Dell’orto design, but also two complete cyclomoteur frame assemblies of their own construction, and sold under the “Presto” brand as ‘Confort’ and ‘Sport’ models.

Le Salon de Paris exhibition in 1951 found the Chapuis stand displaying another new variant, this time posted as BMG: Bici Mosquito Garelli. This machine introduced a new 315 model Mosquito motor, with increased 40 millimetre bore × reduced 39 millimetre stroke now resulting in a 49cc undersquare specification for a higher 1bhp rating at the same revs.

From Stingers by Mark Daniels: For 1953, Garelli announced yet another Mosquito engine, as the version 38-B cyclemotor.
This employed the preceding BMG engine, but omitted the internal reduction gear, so the drive roller located directly on the crank journal. Despite a compression ratio posted at just 5.5:1, the motor still quoted the same 1bhp, but re-rated at a lowly 2,800rpm – the buzzing Mosquito was now set to be droning along instead!
While further ‘Centrimatic’ versions of the 38-B now equipped engines with centrifugal clutching functions, one might have thought the old 307 series ‘reduction’ motor should probably have become obsolete by introduction of the 38-B direct-drive motors in 1953, but it didn’t! The original 38.5cc motor remained in production, side by side with the later B-series models.
After 1953 the BMG was called Velo Mosquito. The rims got smaller, from 600 mm (23.6 inch) to 20 inch (508 mm).

1954 found Garelli introducing the Velo-Mosquito, along developed lines of the earlier BMG. This purpose-made, pressed steel, rigid frame with leading-link forks was a simple and study mounting for the 38-B cyclemotor, and completed the missing link to the obvious next step.

From Wheels of Italy: The Mosquito 38 was a two-stroke engine with a friction-drive roller transmission and engine capacity of 38.5 cc equipped with a carburetor, usually a Dell’Orto, capable of delivering power to 0.8 hp and a total weight of about 4 kg. Fuel was provided by a mixture of oil/gas at 6/7% rate in the tank for 2 liters and consumption was about 70 kilometers per liter. This model, in 1952 France, was known for its solid build quality. This was proven by running the engine continuously for 55 days and 55 nights at an average of 30 km/h. Garelli at that time announced that they had already had a record with over 400,000 identical Mosquito’s in circulating.
The Mosquito 38-B of 1953 had the engine capacity increased to 49 cc.
The “Centrimatic”, which followed the successful Mosquito 38-B in 1955, had a fundamental change: the adoption of a patented automatic transmission that further simplifying operation and succeeded to get the bicycle to reach the 45 km/h goal.

From Stingers by Mark Daniels: As it would be recognised today, the first ‘proper’ Garelli moped appeared in 1955, but this was by no means any sudden end to the Mosquito cyclemotor series that had set Garelli buzzing on its way. All three Mosquito cyclemotor engines, the Centrimatic 49 for £35-6s-6d, the 38-B direct drive 49 for £38-4s-6d, and even the original 307 at £30-9s-7d were still being listed available as late as 1960!
From Into the Desert by Mark Daniels: The first Garelli 515 model was displayed at the Milan Show in December 1955, for market sale the following year. Its fully suspended pressed-steel frame with unit-construction motor, manual clutch, three-speed gearbox, and chain final drive represented the company’s first true moped.
It was about this time that Garelli made its first contact with Agrati, as a supplier of pressings and cycle parts for its new mopeds.

Agrati Capri was “born” in 1958. Continued from Into the Desert by Mark Daniels: Agrati shortly took the decision to develop their own range of scooters and mopeds in competition with the established Piaggio Vespa and Innocenti Lambretta. Debuted in 1958, the Agrati Capri scooter was introduced with a 70cc two-stroke engine made by Garelli, and followed by a 50cc Como scooter model in 1960.

The 1960 flyer above says the M2 tires are 20 x 2.0 (24″ OD). That size was common on mopeds in the 1950’s. But in the 1960’s, 19 x 2.0 (23″ OD) was common. Some time after 1960 the Garelli M, M-2, and Automatic tires changed from 20 to 19″. Here 1962 is a guess.

Continued from Into the Desert by Mark Daniels: The merger (with Agrati in 1961) also presented enough capital release for Garelli to return to its competition origins with the presentation of a new three-speed 50cc sports ‘Junior’ motor cycle. Later fitted with a four-speed gearbox, two specially prepared and faired machines set a number of records at Monza over 3 – 4 November 1963: 6 hours average speed 75.7mph, 1,000 Kilometres at 72mph, 24 hours at 67mph and, to capitalise on the success, a production model Record Sports became popularly sold.

From Into the Desert by Mark Daniels: After 1965, the Agrati name was largely dropped from corporate branding, all motor cycles and scooters continuing thereon under the Garelli badge only.
In 1965 United Rex Motorcycle Corporation 3566 South 2nd West, Salt Lake City UT began selling Garelli motorcycles, rebranded as Rex, in the US, according to April 1965 Cycle World Rex KL-100 article above.
In 1965 Accessory Supply Company, 65 Page St, San Francisco CA, also imported and sold Garelli motorcycles in the US. Both 49 and 94cc models are called Fan Trail because both have upswept exhaust for trail riding, although only the 98 had a fan.

Gulp was “born” in 1967, with a rear tank and no rear suspension.
Euromoped was “born” in 1967. It replaced the Garellino. The rims got smaller. It had a Garelli-made Laura-design M48-02 dry-clutch belt-drive engine with 40 x 38 bore and stroke, instead of 40 x 39 like all the other Garelli 50’s.
In 1967 American Rex Corporation retired the Rex brand name and made new names for US models; Gadabout, Gypsy, Gran Primio, and Gladiator.

Broncco In 1968 to 1972 Broncco minibikes and mini-cycles were sold in the USA by Engine Specialties, in Cornwells Heights, Pennsylvania. They were made in Italy by Fantic Motor or Agrati-Garelli. The first models were yellow minibikes called “Bronco”. But all later models were called “Broncco”, because Ford owned the name “Bronco”.
Only the 1969-70 Garelli-made Broncco TC-4, BC-4 and TS-4 had Garelli 50cc engines. Most other Broncco models were made by Fantic and had Aspera-Tecumseh or Minarelli engines.
The Broncco logo said “Broncco” curved in red letters in front of a bucking bronco. It was the same as the Fantic logo. In 1969-70 the Broncco logo had a small Garelli logo, but in 1971-72 it did not.
In 1971 the Fantic-made TX models continued, while the Garelli-made mini-cycle models were replaced with Fantic-made models. Broncco Diablo, Ranger, Eagle and Warrior had Minarelli P4-50 and P4-70 4-speed foot-shift manual clutch engines. The story of Broncco continues in the Fantic section.

Gulp Matic was “born” in 1969. It had a two-speed automatic-shift engine 357cP, first used on 1960-62 Mosquito M2 Automatic. Only the 1969-70 Gulp Matic had this rounded 60’s engine. From 1971 to 1978 Gulp Matic had the more squared 70’s type “G2” engine.
In 1969 the UK definition of moped was 50cc, 1.5hp (25mph) max, with pedals.
In 1969 Garelli Motor Corporation of America at 1216 Monte Diablo Ave, San Mateo CA 94401, was the US importer.

Goodbye round: 1970 was the last year of the 1960’s moped engines 351, 353, 354, 357 with rounded sides, except for the traditional models M (Colt) and M3.
New “G” engine family: In 1970 a new motor design came out. The rounded sides, cylinder and head fins of the 351, 353, 354, 357 engines became more straight. There were other internal changes. Garelli stopped mentioning the engine model number. So here the 1970-78 vertical-cylinder 50cc engine family is given a made-up name beginning with the letter G. The G-engine family is G1, G1k, G2, G2k, G3v, G3vk, G3m, G3mk, G4mk, G5mk. “k” means kick start, “v” (velocita) means manual hand-shift, and “m” (marce) means manual foot-shift. The engine model is colored gold, instead of blue, to indicate that it’s a nickname.
Engine Model Names: Since American Garelli never gave a name to their one-speed-automatic horizontal-cylinder pedal-start engine, it is convenient to refer to it as the Noi engine, here called H1. In the same manner it is convenient to refer to the two-speed vertical engines as Gulp or VIP, here called G2 or V2. (elsewhere V2 means V-twin). There are also kick start and manual clutch versions, and either 1 or 2 speed automatic, or 3 speed manual transmissions. Altogether the Garelli moped engines are here labeled H1, H1m, H1k, H1mk, H2, H2m, H2k, H2mk and G1, G1k, G2, G2k, G3m and V1, V1k, V2, V2k, V3m. There are also Monza types M1, M1k, and motorcycle types G4mk, G5mk with 4 or 5 speed manual transmissions (some with pedals for UK).
Garelli Fa Moda: Garelli published a several-page 1970 fashion brochure with about 30 images of the 1971-model motor bikes with young people wearing fashion apparel.

New meaning of “Junior”: In 1972 the word “Junior” was removed from the Junior Rekord and Junior Tiger Cross model names. Those were full-size bikes. The kid’s mini-cycle “Bat Baby” with a Morini S5K2 1-speed automatic engine renamed “Junior Cross”. Up to 1971 “Junior” meant “young adult”. After 1971 “Junior” meant “young child”.
Eureka was “born” in 1972. It had the Katia horizontal cylinder engine design. The advantage of a horizontal cylinder design is slightly better bike control and handling, because the weight of the cylinder is lower.
In Jan 1972 the UK “sixteener law” required 16-year-olds to drive only “mopeds”. The new definition of “moped” was 50cc with pedals, unlimited in power and speed. By late-1972 or early-1973, makers like Garelli added pedals to their 50cc motorcycles.

Early fork: The Garelli Eureka and Sport models had the older type fork. It was a one-piece upper (outer) tubes and yoke, with lower (inner) sliding tubes. The other models had separate upper (inner) tubes, a yoke that clamped to them, with lower (outer) sliding tubes.
Eureka Flex: Early 1970’s Eureka models were “hard tails”, no rear suspension. Eureka “Flex” models had flexible rear suspension.

In 1976 the Eureka (US) became the Sport.
In late 1976, the Eureka Flex Deluxe (US) became the Gran Sport.
American Garelli introduced Garelli mopeds to America. These ads were for prospective dealers. Their slogan was “Garelli – What America is coming to”.
American Garelli made excellent service and parts manuals, combined in a black 3-ring standard notebook, titled “The Garelli Manual – A complete manual of service, parts, and technical information prepared for use by Garelli dealers”.
US-model mopeds have brake lights, electric horns, and side reflectors. The switches on the handlebar are different than Euro models. Other than that, the machinery is the same. They have different speed versions: 20, 25, 30mph instead of 25kmh, 40kmh, or 45kmh.
1977
In Aug 1977 the UK definition of moped became 50cc, 35mph max, no pedals required. The early 1977 UK mopeds are like 1976, 50cc with pedals, unlimited in power and speed. The late 1977 UK mopeds are like 1978, under 35mph, no pedals required.

In 1977 American Garelli developed the “oil injector” tank, that was mounted alongside the gas tank. The purpose was to put the correct amount of oil into the gasoline when filling up with gas. It was not a true oil injector, that injects oil into the engine. Only the USA model Garelli mopeds had oil injector tanks. Most of them have been removed. After 20 years their plunger pump did not always pump enough oil. Myrons has recommended mixing the oil and gas manually, and not using the Garelli oil injector, since the early 1990’s.
In 1977 American Garelli disliked the name “Gulpmatic”, and changed it to “Gran Sport Twin”. because it had twin automatic clutches. That name was used in the 1977 Clymer Garelli Manual http://projectmopedmanual.info/Manual_HTML/garelli.html . The new name only lasted about one year. The 1977 Gran Sport had a different frame and engine than the 1977 Gran Sport Twin. That was confusing. So in 1978 and later parts or service manuals, the name is 1977 Gulpmatic. In 1978 the VIP replaced the Gulpmatic.
In late 1977, cast aluminum “mag” wheels were introduced. They are known as “mags” because the earliest cast alloy automotive wheels were made of magnesium. Both spoke and “mag” wheel types are made in Italy by Grimeca.
In late 1977 the Rally Sport replaced the Gran Sport (spoke wheel)

Oil tanks: Notice how all of the 1978 models are facing the right, except the Sport. Notice how all models, except the Sport, have light grey oil injector tanks on the right side of the gas tank. It is rare to see a collection of Garelli’s all with their oil tanks, since they are usually removed at some point. These are the oil tanks that say American Garelli in orange. That dates the bikes to 1977. The actual 1978 bikes had part-black oil tanks with great big OIL INJECTOR writing.
From 16″ to 17″ rims: In 1978, Garelli changed it’s 16″ rims, except Sport, to 17″ rims. The 1977-79 mags were 17″ Razze Incrociate “snowflake” or “X-ray” style.
From 17″ back to 16″: In late 1979, Garelli changed back to all 16″ rims, like before 1978. The 1979-1980 mag wheels were 16″ 7 Razze “7-ray” style.
In late 1977 American Garelli became Agrati-Garelli Corporation of America. With that came many changes. In late 1978, the orange label on the oil injector tank that said American Garelli, was made black, and said oil injector in big letters. In 1978 the bikes began coming with 17″ rims. Other things became black in 1978, like the engine side covers.
In 1978 Agrati-Garelli Corporation of America produced this oversized 3-ring notebook. There are also 1980 and 1983 editions. Each page is stamped with the Agrati-Garelli Spa Gruppo Industriale logo. At the front of each section are the speed versions and the frame number ranges. Newer sections are added at the back, in newer editions.
In 1978 the horizontal 2-speed (H2) engine was introduced on the Super Sport Ltd.

Garelli Noi: Noi means “us” or “we” in Italian. A Noi is a European model that is like a Rally Sport, USA model. The name Noi was never used by either American Garelli or Agrati-Garelli Corp of America. It was not in any parts catalog or service manual. The American name was Sport, Gran Sport, or Rally Sport.

H2 swingarms: Garelli horizontal two speed (H2) swingarms have higher shock mounts than one speed types, to clear the higher 50T rear sprocket. At left is a H2, and right is a H1. The shocks are about an inch shorter on the H2 version.
