Columbia handlebars were first short 06845 on family 1, then medium 06895 on families 2,3,4,5 and then tall 06938 on family 6. The handlebar height and width affects the cable lengths. The cables were first short on family 1, and then 2 inches longer after that on families 2,3,4,5,6.

Gas Valve for sheet frame is located on the left front, close to the decompression valve and start cable. The original had the hose spigot on the right, heading toward the carburetor. Although right is prefered, the replacement gas valve can have the hose spigot going down or left. Shown above is a “12×1 spigot down” replacement petcock, on a yellow Columbia.

Gas tank vent: When adding gas, press the vent button under the seat to let air escape. Otherwise, air will prevent gas from filling the back half of the U-shaped tank. The vent has a light spring that automatically allows air to go in as gasoline goes out.
Gas tank: Tube frame tanks must mix the gas and oil in a gas can, because the tank is too long and thin for the oil to get to the back part and dissolve evenly.
Gas Valve is a vertical type valve used in a nearly horizontal position. It is located on the left rear, near the left pedal. Here it is shown (broken) on a black Columbia. The handle lever gets kicked and broken easily. Care must be taken to not kick it when stepping through the frame.

1-chain hub sprockets for 420 or 420H chain are 5.5 mm thick, thicker than most mopeds.
Some models in family 2, such as this ’79 Imperial, came with an Italy-made steel 1-chain hub on the rear, and a USA-made 2-chain type aluminum hub on the front. So they were sometimes substituting parts.

The rear brake and sprocket are both on the left. The hub center is small 28mm stepping to 24mm in the center. The step retains the lip-less sealed bearings, and so no adapter sleeves are needed.

2-chain hub sprockets for 415 or 415H chain are 4.3 mm thick, and have a 115mm center hole, bigger than any other moped sprocket. That is because of the oversize 105mm drum brake that goes inside the sprocket. Having the brake and sprocket on the same side allows the opposite side to have a screw-on freewheel sprocket for a pedal chain.
Brakes made in USA by Columbia are compatible with Grimeca brakes made in Italy. The cast aluminum Italian-made Grimeca brake shoes on the early 1976-78 sheet-metal-frame Columbias, directly replace the stamped steel American-made brakes on the monotube-frame and late 1978-80 sheet-frame Columbias. The USA made brake plates, cam shafts, lever arms, are also each interchangable with Grimeca items, but the axles are different 12.0 mm on the American-made hub, and 12.7 mm (1/2 inch) on the Italian-made Grimeca hub.

Sachs engine Columbia: On Columbia with Sachs engine, the throttle cable carburetor end passes through a M6-0.75 thread adjuster on the Bing carb elbow, so the adjuster is not trapped on the cable, and is sold separately. The carb elbow, aka curved pipe, can be either short or long. So there are two different throttle cables, short or long. The difference is 1/2 inch of exposed inner wire.

Solo engine Columbia: On Colombia with Solo engine, the throttle cable carburetor end passes through the a M6-0.75 thread adjuster on the top of the carburetor. So the adjuster is not part of the cable, unlike Puch, and like on the Colombia with Sachs engine.

Horn was first located on the right side of the engine in ’76-78, because of CEV round bullet headlight. During 1978 the headlight changed to Peterson rectangular. That allowed the horn to be behind the headlight because there was more room. The horn wires changed in the wiring harness, and also the switches.

Electrical: Columbia lights are completely separate from the ignition. Never will the engine die when the brakes are applied or when the brake light wires are loose, like on many other mopeds. Each of the lights has it’s own generator wire, so they are independent of each other. The 6V 22W AC yellow wire powers the head light, speedo light and horn, the 6V 10W AC green (and green/black) powers the brake light, and the 6V 5W grey wire powers the tail light. Those three lighting source coils, plus a fourth ignition source coil (perhaps 20 volts but not officially rated), comprise the “Bosch 6V 22-5/10” magneto-generator.
