Welcome. Shocks are priced and sold by each unless stated.
Price Range: Dark green price is for used in rough condition. Bright green price is for new condition. Some shocks are available in various used states, ranging from “rough” to “like new”. So the dark green is the lower limit, and the bright green is the upper limit, of the price range. Most will be in between the low and the high, and priced accordingly.
N/A means Not Available.
Damping: Most of these rear shocks do not have hydraulic fluid (oil) damping. Since most are pure springs with no damping, they are very bouncy. Certain high quality ones have some damping, and are less bouncy.
Length: The length is from center of hole to center of hole.
Width: Besides length and eyelet sizes, some shocks are limited in width by the frame or body panels. On Motobecane for example, you can’t put wider shocks even with the same length and eyelets (unless some bodywork is cut off).
Stiffness: You can’t tell how strong a spring is, until you squeeze it. Heavier people need heavier springs, and vice versa.
Travel: Mopeds are for going slow on smooth roads, and so do not need much suspension travel (how far the wheels can move up or down when hitting a big bump). More travel makes the bike taller, but more able to handle bumps. 2 to 4 inches is typical.
Shocks with 8mm Eyelets
Motobecane upper shock bolt: M8-1.0 x 45 (can be 1.25 thread)
Motobecane lower shock bolt: M8-1.0 x 38 (must be 1.00), inner spacer ∅8 x 5
Sachs Balboa has shocks similar to Puch Maxi but longer 315 mm.
JC Penney Pinto shocks are the same as Puch but longer 320mm.
Sears Free Spirit (standard) and Puch Cobra shocks are the same as Puch but way longer 345mm.
Shocks with 8 and 10 Eyelets
Peugeot 103 has a upper 10mm eyelet and a lower 8mm. The lower 8mm bolt can be replaced with a 10mm one, after drilling the frame hole, to accept a more common replacement shock with both 10mm eyelets.
Shocks with 10mm Eyelets
<< This Tomos 221032 shock has more travel, more precision, and other features that make it outperform most other moped shocks. It has some damping, more than other moped shocks, but not as much as a true hydraulic shock. It is also adjustable in spring preload (stiffness) for different rider weights. The longer travel makes bumps feel smaller.
Shocks with 12mm Eyelets
For Puch Maxi replacements, use these but with the original 8 x 12mm spacer tubes from the old shocks placed inside the 12mm eyelets.
