Identification and Dating: Original reflectors have to comply with safety standards in effect at the time they were made. The compliance markings that are molded into the front plastic give a clue to when and where the vehicle was made. The vehicle is always made after the compliance standard, usually many years later. Original tail lights and head lights also have compliance standards that can be used in identification and dating.
Ink stamps: Some reflectors also have an ink stamp on the back indicating the date that the reflector was made. The date the reflector was made is usually many years after the compliance date.
SAE Society of Automotive Engineers is a USA based standards organization that now is worldwide and called SAE International.
UNECE United Nations Economic Commision for Europe makes worldwide standards for automotive equipment and other things. The UNECE “E” number, with a circle around it, on the reflector indicates compliance for a particular country. E1 is Germany, E2 is France, E3 is Italy, … E11 is England, E12 is Austria and 59 other countries worldwide. See country codes for UN reg. 3
JIS Japan Industry Standards are separate from Europe. East Asian countries like Taiwan, China and Korea use Japan standards. So reflectors made in those countries do not have an “E” number.

Speed nuts: Nuts normally screw on, but speed nuts push on. So they should more properly be called “push-on fasteners”. Once “on” they cannot be removed, except by using a dental pick tool to pry and bend back each of the inner petals.
Self-threading nuts (thread cutting nuts) screw on to plastic posts. They can be removed easily, but should not be tightened as much as a normal nut that size.
Broken posts: It is difficult to remove speed nuts without breaking the plastic post. Because of that, many used reflectors have their posts broken off. When that happens the reflector can be re-used by drilling a hole where the post was and using a small screw and nut, instead of the post and speed nut.
Cushions: All of the major moped brands that have reflectors attached by speed nuts use cushions under the speed nut, except Vespa (Piaggio). The cushions protect the posts from breaking and reduce the damaging or annoying effects of vibration.
