1. Sachs Engines
Welcome. “Fichtel & Sachs” was founded in 1895 by Ernst Sachs and Karl Fichtel, in Schweinfurt Germany. Ernst Sachs was a racing cyclist and technical wiz, while Karl Fichtel was a business manager. They made hubs and spindles for bicycles and lorries. Ernst Sachs designed and patented a new bicycle hub, the “coaster brake” in 1894, which sold successfully, and also invented the “free-wheel” in 1903. Fichtel died in 1911, and Sachs, in 1932. The first Sachs engine did not come out until 1930.
Sachs introduced their first Saxonette moped in 1937, a 60cc two-stroke 1.2 hp “motor wheel” where the rear wheel and motor were a unit. 320,000 were made in 1937, and 500,000 in 1938. Read more at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sachs_Motorcycles
Sachs engines have the following numbering scheme: SSX/YZ(W)
- SS is the engine size 30, 50, 80, 100, 150, 175 (50 for US models)
- X is the bottom end designation 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 (4, 5 or 8 for US models).
- Y is the number of speeds 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or A ( 1 or A for US models)
- Z is the cylinder designation, and represents the speed restrictions applied, and may be A, B, C or D
- W is an additional designation sometimes included on later models and import models to identify other peculiarities. A “K” for example indicates the kickstart version.
Examples:
- 301/A is 30 cc size, type “1” bottom end (rear bicycle wheel), “A” automatic transmission
- 501/4A is 50 cc size, type “1” bottom end (1960’s kick-start), “4” speed manual trans.
- 502/2A is 50 cc size, type “2” bottom end (1960’s with pedals) “2” speed manual trans.
- 504/1A is 50 cc size, type “4” bottom end (1970’s no pedals), “1” speed, “A” speed version
- 505/1D is 50 cc size, type “5” bottom end (1970’s with pedals), “1” speed, “D” speed version
- 508/A is 50 cc size, type “8” bottom end, (80’s 2sp no pedals) “A” automatic transmission
- 1005/5A 100 cc size, type “5” bottom end (1980’s kick-start), “5” speed, “A” speed version
- 1255/6A 125 cc size, type “5” bottom end (1980’s kick-start), “6” speed, “A” speed version

The engine cases 4B and 5B are intentionally made different so that the A and D cylinders cannot fit. The cylinder studs are farther inward. That is also why a Sachs cylinder base gasket has slots instead of holes, to fit both types.
To convert a B version (25 km) to an A (40 km) you have to change the engine case set, the cylinder, the intake, the clutch plates, the carburetor, the exhaust, and maybe the sprocket(s). That is too many things to be practical.

Nationality: The engines are made in Germany, but are sold in different European countries, as well as North and South America and other places. Each country has it’s own laws about how fast and powerful a moped can be. That is why there are so many different speed versions. In Germany, there are two kinds of mopeds:
Mofas are 25 km/h (16 mph), no licence required, minimum age 15, no passengers. “Mofa” is short for motorisertes fahrrad (motorized bicycle).
Mopeds are 40 km/h (25 mph), drivers license required (any class), minimum age 16. “Moped” is short for motor mit pedale (motor with pedals).
This is why Sachs 504 and 505 engine cylinders either say “40km” or “25km”, in the casting.
Where’s the governer? There is not a “governer” yet the speed and power are governed. Several things are intentionally restricted to limit how much air the engine breathes. The cylinder ports open late and close early, the carburetor and intake are small, the exhaust is small. Each thing has about the same influence. Sachs designed it to be tamper-proof, for safety reasons, so unlicensed riders won’t be able to go over 16 mph. No fun intended.
Exhaust header: Different speed versions have different exhaust header pipes. Below the are inner diameters and lengths of the header pipes. The “outer” part of the pipe is the visible part. The “inner” part is hidden inside the tail pipe. Add 2 or 2.5 mm on to the ID to get the OD. So the header that says 26mm is 28 or 28.5 outer diameter.
