A. Parts Changes

 

Solex 3800 Parts Changes 1966 to 1988

1966: S3800 Solex replaced S3300, reverse levers, brake closes throttle.
1966: 19″ rims, Soubitez headlight with plastic lens, Seima taillight
1967: Metal gas tank became black plastic. 4 screw mud flap became 2 screw.
1968: Right grip became twist type, allows slowing down without braking.
1967: 1968 to 1975 models were sold in the US.
1972: No more red decal on the air filter cover.
1974: No more gold pinstripes on the fenders.
1976: S3800 Motobecane had Motobecane tail light and logo.

Flywheel (rotor) has at least two versions, identified by the different magnets.

  SEV means Société d’Equipements pour Véhicules automobiles.  SEV (France) has no relation to CEV (Italy). SEV combined with Marchal in 1963, and then was bought by Ferodo in 1970. Ferodo bought CIBIE lights, and then became Valeo in 1980.

Note 1: Models 3800 Export, 4600, 5000 and Pli-Solex have a high headlight that would interfere with a top mounted engine lift lever. So they have a side mounted engine lift lever. It came in early and late versions. The lever and crank must be for the same version.

Top, early lift lever 50021 and crank 50025. Bottom, late lift lever 50021 and crank with roller 50025. They both have the same Solex and Motobecane part numbers. Here we use italics to mean version 2.

Note 2: The Solex fuel pump has to move gasoline uphill to the carburetor using crankcase pressure pulses. The membrane and maybe the plastic seats and balls are needed often to replace deteriorated, worn or sticky ones.

When the top cap or post is unscrewed, the top check ball can easily fall out and get lost. Often a not working fuel pump only needs a ball, or a new membrane. Pumps sold without the top cap or post are usually missing the top ball.

The pump check balls can be tested by blowing and sucking through a piece of small rubber hose or fuel line. The lower line only blows and does not suck. The upper line only sucks and does not blow.

From La pompe à essence Solex moby92.com. There are two glass balls placed on two conical plastic surfaces (seats). Each ball and seat works like a one-way valve. The gasoline can only flow in the direction that makes the ball lift off of the seat.

There are pressure variations in the crankcase that make the pump membrane move. When the piston goes up, the membrane sucks the gasoline, the bottom ball rises, the top ball closes the valve. When the piston goes down, the membrane pushes the gasoline back, the bottom ball closes the valve, the top ball rises, the gasoline goes to the carburetor.

If a ball is stuck by dried deposits, the pump does not deliver anything. If the top ball is missing, the pump sucks at the same time from the top and the bottom, it is difficult to prime, once primed, it does not deliver much, the engine can run out of gasoline. If the conical surfaces of the seats are damaged, it is the same thing. If the copper washer is missing, the balls will have less space, the pump will flow maybe or not at all, and it will leak from the top.

The Solex reverse right brake lever also controls the throttle. Either squeeze the brake or twist the grip to close the throttle. A cam in the grip pushes that little trigger (center photo) which pulls the throttle wire. The single-ended throttle and brake wires are ordinary “universal” moped inner wires.
