N and P 1976-86 had three speed versions:
30mph (2.0hp) 12mm intake, no restrictor,
one 1.5 mm variator limiting washer (gas mileage 117 mpg),
25mph (1.5hp) 10mm intake restrictor,
one 4 mm variator limiting washer (gas mileage 130 mpg),
20mph (1.0hp) 10mm intake restrictor,
two 4 mm variator limiting washers.
F 1985-89 had one speed version:
30mph (2.0hp) 10mm intake restrictor,
one 1.5 mm variator limiting washer,
43 mph actual when de-restricted!

Note 2. The replacement piston is GOL 0037A-C with the skirt shortened from 23 to 20.5 mm. It has the same dimensions. Both rings are the normal type (rectangular cross-section).

A4. Transmission
The T two-pedal-chain transmission is from the 1977 parts catalog (in Spanish) with 32 items listed. This early parts catalog is stamped Derbi Motor Corporation of America. It must have been the first parts catalog. The Variant model is about 85% the same as a US model. The transmission, trim and electrical equipment are the main differences.
Notice that none of the T-only parts have 1989 price list part numbers. That means that Derbi USA did not carry T-only parts. It’s unlikely that they once had all of them but sold all of them. The first few US-model bikes may have had the two-pedal-chain transmission.
The O one-pedal-chain transmission is from the 1979 USA parts catalog (in English) with 27 items. This was on most, if not all, US models.

Note 1. The #28 drive shaft assembly includes #8, #10, #29, #30. The N type drive shaft for non-reed models has a 15 tooth pedal sprocket and two clip grooves for holding the the motor sprocket. The early P type for pyramid-reed models is the same but has M12-1.5 threads for holding the motor sprocket. The late P type for pyramid-reed models is the same but has a 10 tooth pedal sprocket.
Note 2. The sprocket shaft end on a ’83-86 pyramid reed engine sticks out more than on a ’76-82 non-reed engine. So the non-reed left cover with the dimple over the sprocket won’t fit unless the dimple is cut away leaving a hole. The reason it sticks out more is because the end has a short threaded post for a sprocket nut M12-1.5 thread, instead of a clip. It may also stick out more if Derbi moved the sprocket outward to make room for a possible wider rear tire.
Note 3. The #29 shifter spring and two #30 balls go in a hole through the #28 drive shaft, under the #10 shifter dog. Notches in the shifter dog keep it in either the in-gear or out-of-gear positions. Be careful, when the shifter dog is slid all the way out, the spring and balls shoot out and fly away forever.
Note 4. The right gear set tooth total is 62 + 16 = 77. The left gear set tooth total is 55 + 22 = 77. The gear set tooth totals must be equal because the drive shaft and pedal shaft are parallel.
Note 5. The width of the dual gear is 30.5 mm. The two #55 14mm bearings and #56 2 mm spacer totals 30 mm, the same as the #55 dual bearing.
